If I liked Diablo 2, but not Diablo 4, would I like Elden Ring?

I purchased Diablo 4 recently. It took me a while to realise what was off about it. Enemy scaling. For me it makes the core game mechanic pointless. What is the point of getting stronger if everyone, including previous enemies, get stronger too.
I way preferred Diablo 2; it did not have enemy scaling.
I am looking for a game, that feels like Diablo 2 in that I have a character that grows stronger over time, I have enemies that are tough at first and sometimes I need to get stronger in order to overcome them, but also have modern graphics etc.
I am wondering if Elden Ring meets these requirements.

I have not played Elden Ring but it is nothing like Diablo. Elden Ring is a souls-like game (named after the game Dark Souls which pioneered the genre). Although, for a souls-like, I have read it is a fair bit easier than Dark Souls which was known for its very difficult progression. How much easier I have no idea.

I do agree with the enemy scaling. It is very annoying to gain a level and everything you fight seems to gain a level too. I get there should be more difficult enemies but that basic skeleton at level 1 that was difficult should be no threat down the road and easily dispatched.

That said, I think souls-like games are just meant to be very hard all the time. Not my cup-of-tea. YMMV.

They are in no way shape or form similar games. Elden Ring is a Dark Souls style game about learning the patterns of your enemies to counter them.

Ok good to know. Glad I asked

Elden Ring does not have enemy scaling. In fact, it was a “feature” for less experienced players that you could grind up and over-level to help defeat tough enemies. So, in that small way, it’s what you’re asking about.

It is not like Diablo in any meaningful mechanical way though so, if your goal is, “Diablo-like with no scaling” then you’ll be disappointed.

Yeah, very different mechanically in almost every other way.

Kind of like asking “I like mountain biking but not road cycling. Would I enjoy being repeatedly run over the head by motorcycles?” but not in a bad way .

Some(a lot of)times those Fromsoft souls-likes seem to be designed for masochists.

Diablo 3 is still available and doesn’t have enemy scaling.

Yeah, the OP doesn’t mention platform but I’d look at games like Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Path of Exile, and other Diablo-likes to see if they can’t find one that fits what they need. The genre seems large enough that one of them oughta fit.

Grim Dawn is so crazy fun.

It is very much a Diablo type game but pretty deep as far as gameplay goes. I really enjoy it. And I never got tired of it the way I inevitably do with Diablo games.

I like it when games have the option of scaling up to a couple of levels lower than your character. That way, if you’re in an low-level area or low-level quest, it’s easier than it would have been when you were weaker, but not so easy so as to be boring.
