Yeah but if the Democrats get 80% of black vote of the black vote they are in trouble, so any bleeding is harmful. On the other hand, Kamala didn’t really do great on the black vote in her primary run, so I’m not sure how much they are behind her.
It’s not about people changing their vote. It is about turnout, people not bothering to vote because funds for extra outreach aren’t there to engage/propagandize them or because they’re mildly dismayed by the chaos and say “fuck it - not worth taking time off work, taking the damn bus to the polling station and then standing in line for an hour or two.”
It’s also not just about Black women, it’s about ALL potential voters.
Yes, this.
But then, this too:
Money is crucial. But excitement and media interest is crucial, too.
The more I think about, the more I like Kamala Harris.
She has gained much foreign policy experience as veep. She can talk about it on day one, as a candidate, without study. If doubted, see:
Joint Press Briefing — Harris and Zelensky
She is widely underestimated. Her negatives are already known, her strengths, not so much. Lots of Republicans call her giggles. Trump’s insult name for her is Laughing Kamala. After hearing this, voters would be surprised how she calmly demolishes Trump in debate.
Some here have said the U.S. is not ready for a woman President. Dozens of female governors, no problem, but President is different? Too much is perhaps being made of the 2016 race when Clinton won the popular vote by 2.1 percent. That probably would be a win this year.
Delegates should be freed up to vote for whomever they wish. I’m confident they would choose the best-qualified choice — Harris.
If conservative Catholic Mexico can elect a woman minimally of Jewish descent?
The one thing I really know about Harris is she would absolutely destroy the Orange fuckwad in a debate in a heartbeat. I am sort of backing a Kamala Coup just to watch this event.
However, I live in LA county since ‘99. As of right now, CA doesn’t feel like a sure thing to be Blue come November. I think it may actually be closer than usual. There’s much dislike for Harris as CA AG and flip-flopping on gun control. (Maybe others from CA can chime in on this in this thread, if it’s on topic)
OTOH, I really just don’t think a Black American Woman— no matter how positive she seems— can win a POTUS election this year.
I haven’t read the whole thread. Was it ever established that it’s obvious that Biden should step aside?
If it hasn’t, then I wish to bring up a point of order, i.e. that it’s premature to be discussing possible replacements.
Of course, if it HAS, I’d be grateful if someone would link to the post where that happened.
Yeah, that really felt like a game-changer. If a national culture that honors and upholds “machismo” as a principle can elect a female leader, then perhaps the old conventional wisdom (that men won’t vote for a woman) has changed.
In the present emergency—the looking-all-too-likely ascension of Trump and his co-fascists—there might be a lot of men, and women too, willing to give a female candidate the benefit of the doubt.
I’ll have to look it up in the bylaws but I’m pretty sure this thread isn’t legally binding.
Dont worry, you will get to watch her destroying whatever toady trump picks for veep.
The Title of the thread is “if”, not “now”.
Hypotheticals aren’t allowed? Back-up plans? Arm chair arguments over who we want and why we’re right?
Maybe give Scaramucci a shot. He’s plucky.
I agree with this argument that Harris would be a good choice:
This quote came from Matthew Yglesias’ Substack Slow Boring. Your link is broken, but the one below will work:
Yglesias makes a compelling case. Good link, @PhillyGuy
Another reason for it being Harris:
When Democrats voted in 2024 primaries, they thought they were voting for the Biden-Harris ticket. It’s true that they were voting for Biden, but they also thought there was a chance Harris would take over at some point. Just not so soon. As a result, I expect there would be greater acceptance for her nomination than if someone was nominated who might be a complete surprise to primary voters.
Related to this, if Harris is the nominee, the Republicans will say she is the product of Nancy Pelosi and the proverbial smoke filled room. But this would be misleading because Biden will be admitting to a medical or physical condition preventing performance of the presidential job as well as Americans deserve it to be done. And when that happens, the vice president is supposed to jump in. Not a governor. Not the Secretary of Transportation. The vice president. Pelosi may deserve credit or blame for Joe dropping out (if he does), but she will not have named his successor. Harris then would have the greatest legitimacy of any possible nominee in the event Biden has a disabling condition.
Agreed. How many times have we seen people on this board that they would vote for any Dem over Trump.
I will not vote for Harris or for any Democrat who was involved in betraying Biden.
You seem to be taking this personally. If President Biden is OK with this, I’m not sure why you’re not
