Man, I cannot tell you how much time I have lost over ther.
Basically timed quizzes of all sorts.

my productivity is already minuscule so why the heck not
I agree; I’ve spent way too much time on there already. I should really just block both Sporcle and the Dope in order to improve productivity…
I’ve been on Sporcle for about 6 months now. Yeah, it’s pretty cool.

Timed quizzes? What do you get if you win?
Satisfaction.

great site.
I’ve wasted a few hours there and enjoyed every minute of it.
One of these days I’ll learn the elements and world capitals. I’ve got all the countries down.
Yes, I spend way too much time there already. Love it!!
Also, a great site if you run a pub trivia night, and you’ve totally forgot to come up with enough questions for a given night.
I’ve contributed a few but haven’t gotten any published yet. Any dopers gotten one on to the front page?
I defy anyone to get all the answers on this one.
I did pretty well on this one, but there is no way I could type in 50 cities in 8 minutes. I got 30 and ran out of time. I wouldn’t have named them all, but there were a few out there I could have taken a wag at if given a bit more time.
I am going to print out the answers and see if I can just type them in in 8 minutes. It probably can be done, but jeez, you’d have to know all of these cities/towns off the top of your head. No chance!
I don’t thinking the typing would be a problem. It’s about ten seconds a name, which is certainly doable.
The problem that I saw was that many of the cities don’t exist anymore. They’ve been incorporated into larger cities. Spring Garden, for example, used to be the ninth largest city in the country - but who outside of the Philadelphia area still recognizes its name?
You are correct. I printed the names out and just typed them in and had plenty of time left. But it’s impossible to think you’d have these names in your head. I had to stop and think at the midway point, at which point my guesses were mostly wrong. And to know towns that have disappeared would be impressive.
What’s eerie is the parallel between Sporcle and Jeopardy! to the point that it’s hard to tell who’s copying whom.
Love Sporcle. My only issue with them is that they have way too much soccer and their “music” category isn’t down my alley. Otherwise, I have learned a lot and manage to stay in the 80+ percentile on those categories where I dare to compete.
I think a thread that points to the most difficult and/or challenging Sporcle goodies would be fun as well.
In case you haven’t made it there, another way to destroy whatever “spare time” you may have is Gimme Friction Baby which I learned about some time ago here at the Dope. Best I’ve done there has been 42.
I named over half of the chemical elements last night off the top of my head, with no help (no Pb for lead or anything). Thank you, Tom Lehrer.

Hey! Bababooey just mentioned Sporcle on the Howard Stern radio show!
