If you were asked to be a moderator here, would you accept?

I’ve been a moderator on other boards. I didn’t mind it for the most part as the structure was I could moderate at my own convience. This board is much to busy, I don’t think I’d want to devote the time, seem people would expect moderators to actually devote time to the job.

I’ve moderated a politics forum on a website for people into kinky sex.

I can survive anything.

Nah. Don’t have the time for it these days, and I don’t think I’d be a very good mod anyway.

Absolutely not. I wouldn’t have that job at gunpoint. Why would I sign up for so much stress and angst? It’s not as if I didn’t already have my own private jackboot collection, and I like my current coffee mugs just fine.

On a moderately* related topic, does boasting about how you’d hypothetically moderate stuff run the risk of accidentally hypothetically junior modding?

*YSWIDT?

Hey, you’re the one who moved east in time for a major blizzard! Quitcher griping!

Moderators don’t get to choose the forums that they moderate. We are assigned forums based on where moderators are needed, where that moderator spends his or her time as a poster, and the moderator’s personality and skill set. Moderators are expected to participate in the forums that they moderate. That way we know the culture of that particular forum and we know how the rules have been enforced in that forum over the years.

If for example you’ve spent all of your time in the Pit and have never even posted in GQ, you’re not going to get asked to moderate GQ. You won’t have the right personality fit or skill set for that forum. Likewise, I personally would make a very poor Pit moderator. I’ve spent so little time in the Pit over the years that I really don’t have a good handle on how that forum should be moderated.

Vegan jackboots we can probably work with. Fuzzy pink slippers are definitely a no-no.

You make one giant, glaring, horrendous mistake, and people never let you forget it.

Moderation in all things, except moderation. None of that shit.

I fear I have some fundamental differences with current moderators and their approach to moderation, differences sufficient to mean I wouldn’t fit in with the current staff.

 You haven’t been asked yet? Mods, get on that–Bone would be great!

(edit–in case there’s any question about whether my first comment is connected to my second, there’s not; I’m sincere in saying Bone has an evenhanded steady temperament and sense of fairness that would make him an awesome moderator).

Agreed. Bone for moderator!

I’ve no interest in applying and I assume they have no interest in offering.

Like Eliahna, I wouldn’t mind an opportunity to see the mod forum and all the secret conversations they’ve had over the years. Look back at the various board splits over the years and compare the public and private comments of the moderators, that sort of thing.

I’d do it, mostly because I tend to be around late night when the spammers come out and not many mods are on.

Now that, that I would do. I’d love to be able to delete the shit out of spammers.

I’ve had a similar position with another major website that’s been mentioned several times on SDMB. By the time they asked me to “moderate” (edit, actually), my enthusiasm had waned, but I said yes out of a feeling of some obligation. It became clear that most of my peers were spending hours every day on the site, while I could barely be arsed to check in every day, or even every other day. I’m embarrassed to say that I more or less ghosted them.

I cannot imagine that I’d do any better with the SDMB, I’m afraid. There might be an initial flurry of enthusiasm, but I wouldn’t be in it for the long haul. I’ve learned about commitment as I’ve gotten older. I used to be quick to buy in, but I’ve learned enough about myself now to be much more gun shy.

Marley, is that you?

Moderate a bunch of namby-pamby Dopers for no cold cash?!?

Hardly!

I’d give a hearty “thumbs down” to that proposition!

However…

…I heard…“around the grapevine”…that SDMB moderators enjoy a *particular *“fringe benefit” that, if true, could possibly coerce me to re-think my position on this matter.

If it’s true, as my reliable sources relate, that SDMB moderators are recipients of frequent, extreme gratuities of a sexual nature…well then, draw up a contract and let’s get the balls rolling!

All very well and good…until it’s your turn in the barrel.

No. Same reason I should never be on a jury. I wouldn’t be fair at all.

Grues? Are you likely to be eaten by a grue?

Someone had asked this question before, and I couldn’t think of a way of articulating why I would say no. But this is perfect.

Though I also wouldn’t like the stress, either.
