That’s pretty minor stuff. If that offends you I hope you don’t go to a show where a comedian jokes about rape or cancer.
Aaand you sail past the point. It’s perfectly fine to laugh about rape or cancer. Laughter is the best answer to the most horrible things in life.
On the other hand, if you laugh at rape victims, you’re a major league cunt.
Louie C.K.'s humor has nothing to do with PC.
How about Doug Stanhope?
PC goes beyond racial issues when discussing media and includes basically any taboo subject. Death, drugs, sex, violence, gender politics, and immoral acts of varying levels can all be subject to criticism and calls for self censorship from overly sensitive PC types. It’s interesting because right leaning religious types and neo-Puritans on the left overlap their opinions on a lot of these topics. Another win for the horseshoe theory.
There are plenty of white middle to upper class libs who are super PC. The sort of PC that looks like a Republican stereotype of what libs believe and you can’t believe people like that actually exist or function in the real world. Thankfully they mostly use other sites, not so much here. There’s been a blacklash against them in recent years though they’re still influential. At least there’s some sanity out there still.
Then again there are several high profile comedians who refuse to do college campus tours anymore because they’re way out of control with the PC BS, so maybe it’s not getting better.
When you’re reading a media critique look out for red flags like “X was problematic” or “Y was offensive” or “what sort of message does this send?” These are the types who think Blurred Lines and Game of Thrones are bad because they promote rape culture.
What do you mean exactly? Are you saying his material is PC? There was a backlash against his SNL appearance. You can’t make race and pedo jokes without drawing PC ire.
A PC comedian who’s actually funny is incredibly rare. It’s easier for me to think of individual acts that just happened to be safe and family friendly. The sort of stuff that Carlin used to do way back in the day, for example.
No, I’m saying the concept of PC is irrelevant to his comedy and indeed any good contemporary comedy.
Backlash? Hardly. There was some very mild discussion regarding whether he had “crossed a line” or something but it was more talking heads chattering than anything else.
What is a “PC comedian”? Who is a PC comedian? Anyone who works “clean,” or family-friendly like Jim Gaffigan or Jerry Seinfeld?
I don’t think there is any such thing.
I don’t know that it crossed any line, but that would be an example of not clever, not funny attempt at comedy. Which is worse than the Holocaust.
Sounds like it got a great reaction to me. And sure it crossed a PC line, it made fun of the way Middle Eastern cab drivers talk.
You don’t really grok PC, do you ?
Look, I was obviously not talking about humor in the OP. I was talking about people who whine “Don’t give me that PC nonsense” or the like when someone else isn’t holding to the accuser’s particular line of prejudice.
I think the fallacy you’re believing in is that every objection to PC is because someone wants to be bigoted because often that is exactly the case.
For example, Bill Maher often says “Don’t give me that PC nonsense”, and when he does, he’s always right.
What are people’s thoughts on Twitter hate mobs who get people fired and/or humiliated over fuck all?
Take the case of Sir Tim Hunt, for instance. He is a Nobel prize winning scientist who, at a conference for women in science, made some remarks which in print came off as sexist. The Twitter twats descended and he was forced to resign. Par for the course, nowadays.
Now, however, a video recording has come out which clearly shows that (a) Hunt was actually making a self-deprecating joke, and (b) that his remarks were warmly received by the largely female audience. The original reporter, a failed science journalist, with no significant accreditations, spun his remarks to make Hunt look as bad as humanly possible and then a bunch of cunts with 140 character attention spans lost their shit and Hunt lost his job.
Or there’s #Shirtstorm, where Dr. Matt Taylor, the scientist who landed a probe on a comet a while back, was forced into a tearful apology because he wore a shirt with some scantily clad cartoon female characters on it as a favour to the woman who designed the shirt, who happened to be a close friend of his! That prompted articles like “I Don’t Care That You Landed A Probe On A Comet. Your Shirt Was Sexist.” And tweets to Dr. Taylor personally like “Thanks for ruining the comet landing for me, asshole!”
Are people who object to that kind of PC bullshit bigots as well?
Is he ?
I need some clarification on this one. Who was raped here?
He could have done it on behalf of the Make A Wish Foundation for pandas dying of testicular cancer, that doesn’t change the fact that his shirt was absolutely, unquestionably inappropriate for a global conference on Awesome Stuff NASA Just Did, Holy Christ You Guys.
America !
Which of course means he must lose his job. Not because the employer wanted to fire him, but because other people called for his resignation.
PC-ness wouldn’t actually be a terrible thing if it didn’t come with intimidation. We should all be nicer and politer to one another and conservatives of a religious persuasion have complained for decades about how coarse and rude our culture has become. Political correctness makes us aware of the need to be more sensitive to each other. Where it goes too far is when the lynch mobs show up and get your employer to take away your livelihood.
Non-PC making fun of PC…
From Rescue Me. Let it run into part 2.
It wasn’t a global conference, it was a brief 2 minute interview. And do you think the reaction was excessively hostile, given the “offence”, especially in light of the fact that he was wearing it as a favour to a female friend? Could those aggrieved clickbait merchants have handled the situation better?
I didn’t say that. I don’t think “is a terminally socially unaware dork” is a fireable offense for a NASA boffin, unless it’s a chronic condition. Had he been a PR or marketing guy though ? Oh yes.
