Wow. I was a little iffy on the Winston bandwagon, right up until his claim. Most definitely scum. I can only assume that he was hoping that another mason would claim, and the wolves would have another target at night. Seems like claiming Seer or Angel would be better there, but maybe he thought it’d be too obvious and they woudn’t bother counterclaiming.
Anyway, it’s too bad the town isn’t going for the best play - force him to name one of his co-masons. If that person says he’s lying, lynch Winston. If that person backs Winston up, lynch Winston anyway. That way, regardless of his alignment, they bag a scum tomorrow, guaranteed, and possibly two.
@Smitty: It’s common for Masons to be able to talk during the night (and sometimes day), but it appears that’s not allowed in this game. It’s a relatively minor ability, though. Knowing 2 other people are innocent is the best part.
Looking ahead – once the game has been won, does the Gamemaster reveal all? As in, who were the Guardian Angel, Seer, Masons?
Who the Guardian Angel protected each night?
Who the Seer asked about each night?
Can non-wolves read the wolves’ ‘night time’ deliberations?
I think all the above would be fascinating, and help up newbies get up to speed, seeing what did and didn’t work.
The problem with off-board communication is that the only things townies have to go on is the conversation. The clues as to who’s who are there in the thread; but with off-board emails, not everyone gets to see the whole picture.
Plus, while it seems like a benefit, it often isn’t. Say Poster A emails you, tells you they’re a Mason, and B and C email too to confirm that. They could actually be werewolves, but since the true Masons can’t see the emails they don’t know they’re being claimed against. It would only work if everyone sent every email to everyone else - so really it just makes sense to keep everything in the thread.
Another reason is that, for the most part, the players here are new to the game. If you email Poster A and say “Oh, so-and-so can’t be a werewolf - they’ve claimed to be a Mason, and you’re not allowed to claim roles you don’t have” I can’t see it and so correct the misapprehension.
Assuming they’re killed, the GA, Seer and Masons will be revealed on their death. But yes, i’ll have a rounding-up summary at the end, and i’ll say who was protected and investigated.
At the end of the game i’ll make the werewolf deliberation group open to read by anyone. That way all the players can read it, and so can any non-players who are also interested. I’ll stick an url in the round-up. Dead wolves still have access to the group at the moment, so if you’re interested in reasons for killing you could ask one of them (and I see Menocchio is already providing information like that, so I don’t really need to say).
I’m not sure if Winston’s play was as bad as it seems at first glance. First, Winston was sunk. He had 8 votes against him with only 15 players left. That should have ended the day right there(> 8 votes and more than 50% of players). So he tried a last-gasp move to try and get some information for remaining Werewolf(wolves?). If a Mason was stupid enough to reveal themselves to counter his claim, so much the better.
He also pointed to jsgoddess and MadTheSwine as possible Werewolves. If he was trying to be really clever, he would have mentioned a Werewolf here.
I would have liked to see how a seer claim would have played out. Especially because he could have made a good case for lying low, and he made some seer like comments regarding his suspicions towards the end that he could say were breadcrumbs.
I found this response to Winston to be interesting:
Just sounded to me like something a mason might say.
Yeah, I figured that, which is why I thought there’d be no reason to make a rule against a tactic that’s got pretty limited use. However, I hadn’t considered the noob factor, which makes good sense.
Oh, and as for Masons talking, the custom is that they can talk only to each other, not privately email random players. Just like how the mafia gets to talk amongst themselves at night.
Sturm as the seer? Could be, I do get the feeling that he has some sort of special role.
Anyone else have any guesses as to roles?
Suburban as a Mason maybe?
Dnoonman I think might have a role to, however didn’t he take over for someone? Seems a tad more likely that the people who dropped out were just regular townies.
No real suspicion on who the GA is though.
Well thats just my take on suspicions gather from only reading as it comes up. No way I am reading a 20 page thread I am not even participating in over again.
How the heck do you spot the GA? The Seer can be spotted by knowing the right answer in the absence of evidence. The Masons may eventually be picked out by voting patterns, but it seems to me that the open behavior of the GA would match vanilla townies.
Why, people who are playing special roles are protected from tornados, earthquakes and visits from the in-laws?
Same likelihood as anybody else. Of course it would disrupt things more if a key role dropped out, but well, Menocchio got dropped out pretty fast and not replaced
Well no of course not, and I suppose some of those people who dropped out may have had excuses that they didn’t share with the wider world, it just seems to me to be more likely that one would continue playing if they had a more interesting role. Hence “tad more”.
Being lynched and quitting are completely different things, and while I don’t have any experience in this game, in the world of special roles it seems Alpha Wolf is the least important. YMMV.
Menocchio good point, I suppose there is no way to tell who the GA is, unless they try a little harder to get people to admit to roles so they know whom to protect.
