I'll live to regret this, but here's the Semantle thread

I like wordless while I’m having my coffee and this game when I’m more awake.

I really enjoy these, it’s like a game of linguistic Battleship!

I got it in 143 today, but the path was fascinating.

Got it in 96 today. Is using a thesaurus cheating? Because if so, call me a cheater.

My fourth guess,

hurt

was in the top 1000.

My 13th guess,

pity

was in the top 100.

I didn’t get in the top 10 until my 95th guess–and my very next guess was right.

I didn’t get it today. I’m still trying to understand how some of the connections to words are determined. I made a couple of guesses that I would associate with the answer, but they were ranked very low.

I’m very curious, do you mind dropping in a few of those with a spoiler? I’m also trying to unpack the connections… I know technically how they’re determined, it just isn’t always intuitive to me either.

These both ranked very low on similarity, if we were free associating on today’s answer, I suspect a lot of people would use these words.

Birthday and party

Oh yeah, especially that second word. I wonder if the fact that they use Google News articles to create the word network skews the types of associations that come up.

Maybe, it’s seems like it’s more about word type (noun, verb, etc.) and kind of concept of the word, whether it is an abstract idea, emotion, etc.

I got #69 in 55 guesses. I made one guess that scored 981 and I started guessing variations of that word, but it was more the similarity in concept with the answer word, if that makes sense.

It kind of feels like this game is retraining my brain.

53 tries, basically the same. And I know 100% what you mean, I also was trying variations in the 980s/990s until a slight change in tack…

I kind of had a breakthrough on that puzzle and feel like I’m starting to understand it better. I do wordle with my first coffee and this game over breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner.

The word investment scored 998, so I tried investing and investor, but those all scored much lowe. It was then that I realized it wasn’t the root of the word, but what an investment is

111 guesses for #69 today. Man, it feels so good to see a green bar after flailing around for so many bad guesses even though you can still be way off.

I followed the exact same path, including those words. I agree it’s starting to make some sort of sense. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, it’s all about how the word is used in their data set in sentences and such. So it’s not the synonyms or like meanings it’s the words that could replace the word in a sentence and still make sense. Synonyms and Antonyms do still help because they can often be used interchangably to a degree.

Until I hit the top 1000 it can be a lot of random flailing, and even then I can find myself making a lot of guesses that only help in they’re not closer. My line of thought is to try and think of how each word guessed would be used in a sentence and try to find a connection that way. I don’t know if it’s actually a good strategy to get the solution, but looking a r/Semantle anything under 100 guesses seems pretty lucky/good. (I saw one person who spent 500+ guesses- amazing persistence)

With puzzle 69, I got it in 62 tries, but only 53 and 43 were in the green before I hit the answer. (26 then 808/1000) Often I spend a lot more guessing in the green to get an answer.

It’s probably not about whether it’s a noun or verb, because on the one I gave up on my closest guess was a different part of speech of the same word, and it got a very high score – according to the game, the highest possible score short of the solution.

I think I’m giving up on this one; I don’t want to spend this much time trying to get my head into the place in which the game makes sense. Might be worth it for figuring out how to get along with somebody or how to sway their vote or how to get them to buy my produce or just because I found the particular person fascinating; not worth it to me for this game.

Mileage obviously varies.

I like the game because it feels like brain exercise. I’m a little wobbly afterwards, like after I do my push ups.

I start every semantle with the word trout and every wordle with the word midst. One day, trout and midst will be the answer for both puzzles and on that day my head will explode.

83 on puzzle #70.

I was badly stuck after my 27th guess, which scored 550/1000 and stayed my max score until my 79th guess, when I made a sideways semantic leap to land on 986/1000. Very satisfying.

I gave up on #70 today after 221 guesses. Seeing the answer, I doubt I would’ve ever made it there. There’s always tomorrow. Coincidentally, I got to the 550/1000 word, too.

Yesterday’s shocked me: my tenth guess was right.

Today it took me 51, with the help of a thesaurus once I got to word 993.

I’m getting so much better at this.

Huh, oddly enough, i guessed it right after reading this. And also, thinking about using news articles.
