I'll live to regret this, but here's the Semantle thread

I solved Semantle #78 in 87 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 23.54. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #52. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 52.29 (992/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

I solved today’s Redactle (#11) in 16 guesses with an accuracy of 62.50%. Played at https://www.redactle.com/

I solved Semantle #79 in 173 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.30. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #72. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 61.33 (982/1000).

I solved today’s Redactle (#11) in 53 guesses with an accuracy of 52.83%.

The Semantle was simpler than I thought and in a completely different direction than I was going for. The last 4 guesses really helped narrow things down.

Redactle was a rabbit hole of historical guesses until I cottoned onto the tilt of the article and then it was 5 guesses to completion.

Holy cow, I did not see that coming

I solved Semantle #79 in 84 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.44. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #76. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 1.78. https://semantle.novalis.org/

#76 was 336/1000, followed by a bunch of scrambling, and then finally #84 got it. Only one word in the green the whole time

I got Semantle 79 on my first guess! https://semantle.novalis.org/

Yes, my start word was the word. That was weirdly less satisfying than I thought it would be if it ever happened…I had settled myself in with a cup of coffee and was ready to go.

I also have m a d monk26 to think (trying to avoid tagging him here)… i’ve always used the word horse, because my daughter rides and we’re around horses all the time, but I only recently started using it as a start word when I saw his post about ‘trout’

I finished yesterday’s redactle with a 107. I got the general topic pretty early, but was completely off track about what the category of the answer was, so I got a boatload of words correct until I landed on the answer.

Semantle in 1! That’s awesome, Maserschmidt! I got 79 in 8 guesses, which beats my previous record of 11. I have a starting set of words that cross a lot of categories, and so I got my first green one on entry 3. From there it was quite a linear path.

In fact, it took me more time to get today’s Wordle than the Semantle, and I never thought that would happen.

That was the opposite of 78, which took me 200 or so. As a reminder, the word was philosophical. What was interesting was the vast array of topics that were in the top 1000, because that word encompasses a lot of senses. That made it hard to home in on the answer. Today’s, on the other hand, once you enter a barnyard animal, you were well on your way.

33 for me today–much easier than yesterday’s!

I got yesterday’s pretty quickly. I had to cheat on one before because I eventually narrowed it down enough that I was able to say, “oh, I do not know the name for this thing.”

I like redactle quite a lot. It still has a lot of random guessing early on but feels more deductive to me than semantle, but there are certainly going to be articles than are going to be unsolvable even if you guess every word aside from the title.

Yeah, both puzzles are similar in that you’re looking for that first word that gives you a toehold on the subject, but with redactle I find myself poring up and down looking at the structure as well. It’s quite fun.

I solved Semantle #79 in 96 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.94. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #47. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 30.98 (139/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

I can’t imagine ever getting a one, hard to even imagine that in regular Wordle.

Got it in 17 today! I feel like maybe I should retire.

I started with my usual method of picking a letter and guessing all the words I could think of beginning with that letter until some patterns started to emerge. Once I tried gopher, groundhog, and giraffe, I figured I was headed in roughly the right direction.

Hmm, I might try that. Sounds better than my usual random stabbing in the dark method.

Just played my first - and I suspect last - game of Semantle. Not that it isn’t fun, but an outlandish stroke of luck landed me quite near the target word on the first guess, so I was able to solve it in 6. I can never, ever again expect such a fluke, so I had better quit now.

That way if it ever comes up in conversation I can say, “Semantle? Oh yes, a great game. My average is 6 guesses.” And it won’t be exactly a fib.

Got today’s in 17. My fifth play, and previously my best was around 150. I guess I’ve been pulled back in! Shameful.

Wordle? Played almost every day since it first was linked to on this board, in the Briny Dee post that is never far from the top in Game Room. Yet I have not bookmarked the game, always have to go back to that post and click the link to play it. Because I’m not hooked, can quit anytime I want.

Today’s followed a very weird path, but I got there….

I solved Semantle #80 in 50 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 18.51. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #11. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 79.01 (995/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #80 in 15 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 12.18. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #10. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 60.66 (954/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

New personal best!

Whoa! Got it in 11 this time. (My third guess was husband, and from there it was a matter of “guess a bunch of other things in the same general category.”)

Damn, good start, but it still took some work.

I solved Semantle #81 in 39 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 5.82. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #14. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 8.17. https://semantle.novalis.org/

I solved Semantle #81 in 73 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.97. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #46. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 19.54 (83/1000). https://semantle.novalis.org/

Made a lucky guess or I would’ve gone on a lot longer.

I solved today’s Redactle (#13) in 63 guesses with an accuracy of 47.62%.

I’m not great at these, but they’re fun. I had a spelling issue on this one that delayed my landing on the answer by a bit.
