In this thread, now tragically locked, you have created a flame almost worthy of being spoken of in the same breath as Cervaise’ immortal “The Telemarketer Speaks - I Respond”.
I am deeply grieved that I have little time to do much beyond start a thread heaping embarassingly fulsome praise upon you for brightening my day. Friends are coming to visit from out of the country, and I should be preparing for them. Instead, I am wasting time posting to the SDMB.
It is worth it.
Regards,
Shodan
PS - Lest this be considered a joke thread, and not a serious flame, fie and fornication be upon thee, thou scurvy yet literate knave.
It was a pretty good show. I especially like how he says he’s 33, and then when someone half that age roundly and soundly admonishes him for stealing, he resorts to calling them gay. By the way, Ilsa_Lund:
In what? Just curious, I never knew a real prodigy before.
P.S. I called you annoying in that other Pit thread. I apologize for that. You ain’t so bad.
Beautiful post. But I have a question…how do they determine who is allowed to listen to the music (or movies) I purchase? I thought it was determined years ago that the video recorder was not illegal, as long as the person recording doesn’t make money from it. If I purchase a CD and copy it for my car, is that illegal? If I copy it for a friend, is that illegal? How about if I copy it for a relative? What exactly IS the law on these activities?
For the record, I’ve never downloaded music from the internet and probably never will. But I have copied CDs.
While I have not always agreed with Ilsa, I canNOT deny that when one encounters dippiness of this magnitude, there is a great temptation to wander up and begin poking at it.
I cannot, in good conscience, pit Ilsa, because I might well have done the same thing, if I had gotten there first, and if I’d felt particularly gleeful and vicious at the time.
Is the RIAA evil? Well, yes. In the same sense that any large, soulless corporation seeking to maximize its profits is evil. They have reacted to file-sharing in the same way any rich guy reacts when his income-source is imperiled. Rich guys’ ultimate fear is that someone will change the rules in such a way as to take their money away from them, and they tend to lash out pretty nastily when they percieve that this is happening. It’s pretty easy to characterize someone as “evil” when you’ve been hit upside the head with their lawyer a few times for doing something that seems fairly harmless.
But when someone insists on standing up and screaming “I’M A MORON, I’M A MORON, I’M A MORON!!!”, I can’t really bitch at anyone who wants to stand up and take potshots…
Aw, why be hatin’?
I don’t harbor any illusions that it was near as good as “The Telemarketer Speaks.” It was just fun while it lasted.
Also, I wasn’t defending the RIAA. I hate them too. I was pitting his infantile sense of entitlement to everything he wanted, right when he wanted it. Hell, I’ve downloaded music. Not very much was copyrighted, but some was.
