Nobody voted for Andrew Johnson as President.
As usual, this is a laugh-a-minute deadpan comedy in high Gray Lady style.
Some choice bits:
“Perot’s intensely nationalist and protectionist politics resonated with a lot of center-right voters that otherwise would have voted Republican,” said Dan Senor, a former Bush administration official who advised Mr. Romney’s campaign. “And the environment today is even more intensely populist. If Trump were to run as an independent, who knows what impact he could have in what will otherwise be a close election?”
That possibility, said Thomas M. Davis, a former Republican congressman from Virginia, is reason enough for the party not to attack Mr. Trump. “You’ve got to keep him in the tent ,” Mr. Davis said. “He just wreaks havoc, and every vote he takes comes out of our hide.”
(Emphasis mine.) The idiom “better inside the tent peeing out than outside the tent peeing in” doesn’t work if the idiot is spraying urine everywhere with wild reckless abandon, not knowing or caring how much of it gets on them. Trump has actually lost business due to his actions in this thing, and he shows no signs of slowing down or limiting the scope of his befouling just because people are now declining to give him money.
Now, what remains so appealing to many of the white voters who like Mr. Trump is his perceived willingness to tell hard truths about delicate issues — racial and otherwise — that, to their mind, the party establishment is too timid to discuss.
“There are a lot of people who are very angry at the grass-roots level and who are convinced the Republican leaders in Congress are not doing everything for the conservative cause,” said Charlie Black, a former adviser to John McCain in 2008 and Mr. Romney in 2012. Mr. Trump, he said, holds undeniable appeal to such voters.
A poll released by the Pew Research Center in May found that 63 percent of Republican voters view immigrants as a “burden” who compete for jobs, housing, and health care compared with 32 percent of Democrats.

“The Republican Party is going to have to be much more aggressive in dealing with him,” said Hector V. Barreto, who has advised every Republican presidential campaign since 2000. “And I would expect my party to do that, to call him out.”
He added: “Maybe this is our Sister Souljah moment when we say, ‘He is not a Republican, he does not represent us, he needs to get off the stage.’ ”
Reminds me of a song from my ill-spent youth:
Your Racist Friend by They Might Be Giants:
This is where the party ends
I can’t stand here listening to you
And your racist friend
[snip]
It was the loveliest party that I’ve ever attended
If anything was broken I’m sure it could be mended
My head can’t tolerate this bobbing and pretending
Listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he’s saying
[snip]
Can’t shake the devil’s hand and say you’re only kidding

The mainstream GOP has been shaking the hands of some real Devils since Nixon and the Southern Strategy, and this truly is where that party ends, not with a bang, but with a long string of funerals for the people that GOP appealed to.
Lance_Turbo:
Trump’s name recognition has been more or less constant throughout. However polls before and after his comments about Mexicans are decidedly different. I don’t think he’ll rise much higher than this because there’s only so many people who hate Mexicans, but you can’t ignore that those people exist and have swung to Trump.
Data.
Why do you think people have to hate Mexicans in order to be bothered by illegal immigration and resentful of the government allowing an influx of criminals from Mexico?
Why do you think I think that? I think that people who hate Mexicans have swung to Trump. Who do you think people who hate Mexicans were planning to vote for a month ago? Who do you think they’re planning to vote for now?
Let’s avoid the broad brush insults, please. Any more like this and someone will earn a warning.
The best part of the NYT story, from my twisted POV:
Dan Senor?! Our own “Baghdad Bob” from back in 2003-2004, the spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority who put a sunny face on everything while the wheels were coming off the occupation?
That Dan Senor?!?
How did I get into an alternate reality where Serious News Outlets still quote this guy, and how do I get back to my proper timeline, dammit?

Because there are two sides and the media must properly balance quotes from each side.
It’s just that the two sides today are the sane and the insane.
I just saw this headline today:
UNSTOPPABLE TRUMP: The Donald is rocketing upward in the polls and dominating the 2016 race
Trump’s campaign announced Friday that he would meet with “families with victims of illegal immigrants” to discuss their tragedies. The next day, he headed to Arizona, where his campaign said an “overwhelming response” led to the venue being changed “to accommodate the thousands of people expected to attend.”
Now I know who his ideal VP is: Joe Arpaio.

But, yeah, I would love nothing more than this braying jackass get the nomination. It would likely be the first time a single party carried every state in the Electoral College. And to be clear, it wouldn’t be the Republicans.
He might actually win Arizona. Be careful what you wish.

How ironic that the Republican candidate might be a donkey.
Now he’s just trolling the GOP with his one-time wealth tax. It’s damned funny.
The first person that came to mind as a potential VP for Donald Trump is Clint Eastwood.
Nah, it’ll be Piers Morgan. Trump and Piers have been buddies for a long time. They think alike.

Tell ya what though, if it does end up being Sanders vs. Trump I think it’s safe to say that Americans are fed up with the political establishment.
It would be fun, but Piers is not a natural born citizen, so is even less eligible than Cruz and Rubio.
Please. . . it’s Trump/Stallone all the way! Schwarzenegger will be Sec of State. Bruce Willis will be Sec of Defense.
And Chuck Norris’ fists will be the U.S. Armed Forces.
