Well, I underwent the scrutiny Monday night, and I passed with flying colors. I’m being confirmed at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. Our Lady of Wisdom Byzantine Catholic Church.
I figure, if all of you come, it’ll be great. We haven’t got our actual church building built yet, so we’re temporarily in a modular building that’s about the size of a shoebox. It’ll be like the VW Beetle stuffing contests back in the seventies, only with incense.
I’m thirty-two years old, it’s about time…

Congratulations, agisophia! What name are you taking?
I don’t remember my confirmation all that well, I was in 7th grade - the Catholic Church’s version of “vote early, vote often”. But my college roommate went through RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation for Adults) my senior year, and I was his sponsor. He got the whole package - baptism, confirmation, eucharist. It really was a wonderful experience, one we had put a lot of effort in. I wish that I had been older for my Confirmation, it would have meant a lot more.
Sala, can’t you count?!? I said NO camels! That’s FIVE camels!
I’m taking the name Michaela. After the Archangel Michael. There’s a long story there that I don’t have time to type at just this moment. I’m supposed to be getting ready for work right now…

My warmest congratulations, agisofia. I rejoined the Church in my early 20s – having been baptized, but not raised, Roman Catholic – and I was confirmed a few years back. (Come to think of it, I was also 32.) I took St. Dismas as my patron. “Michaela” is a beautiful confirmation name, and you can’t do better than an archangel for a patron!
I’m very happy for you, dear. Have a beautiful and blessed Easter.
AGISOFIA – Blessings to you on the occasion of your confirmation. I was confirmed into the Protestant faith (Congregationalist) as a fourteen-year-old and, frankly, I think it might have been more meaningful to be confirmed as an adult, though certainly I took the process seriously even at that age. I’ll be there in spirit as well, and will look for an appropriately kitchy yet appropos confirmation gift – perhaps a plastic Blessed Virgin Mary night light? Congratulations.
jodih - funny you should mention that. A friend of mine from Ireland (very devote) has a glow-in-the-dark statue of Mary. She says she knows its way cheesy, but likes it because it’s the last thing she sees at night. Personally, I think she should try to set up a snakeoil business selling visions in her closet…

I agree with others who have said that it is more meaningful to be confirmed as an adult. I’m sure I speak for many of us who experienced it as children and didn’t really have a clue as to the significance of the occasion.
weirddave-
Right now, it’s late and I’m too tired to come up with an explanation that wouldn’t include a lot of Catholic “in group” terminology that would only leave you confused. But I think you deserve one. Tune in to this channel over the weekend…
And thanks for all the warm thoughts, everyone.
