Yeah, another vote for not being a liar here. Your experiences are not everyone’s experiences. I wouldn’t boast about not knowing anything about them, because that’s stupid, so if that’s the real issue here, I can get behind that. But calling people liars because they aren’t exposed to much entertainment news? Nope, you’re wrong there.
This is what I know about “Kardashian”: They are a famous family. I think they have a reality tv show? One is called Kim. She had a photo taken of pouring champagne onto her butt - I saw some memes that sprung up from that, which is how I know about that pic. Don’t know anything else about the family.
I’m not lying. I have a tv but don’t watch reality tv. I don’t look at / buy tv magazines. I’m active on social media, but not into entertainment stuff. I don’t have kids.
Oh wait, I also know Caitlin Jenner is linked to them somehow, but no idea how. I’m interested in trans issues, hence I am aware of Caitlin and that there is/was a link. But that was prompted by this thread; if I was thinking of one for any reason, the other wouldn’t freely pop into my thoughts.
The first time I encountered the name Kardashian was app 12 months ago, apropos of nothing in particular.
First time I’d ever heard of Taylor Swift was driving home from a holiday 6months ago with my son in the car…he spent virtually the entire 8hr drive regaling me with the who’s who and what of Pop Culture. Oh…he’s 30 btw. Fuck it was a boring drive.
But you know, I wouldn’t know a Kardashian or a Taylor Swift if I fell over them on the street. No idea what they look like, to my knowledge have never heard a Swift song (I listen to talk, nor music radio).
And as far as the current crop of ‘movie stars’, other pop singers and shit goes, I’m more than happy to remain ignorant. It just doesn’t interest me one iota.

[li]She is or was on some reality show that I never watched.[/li][li]She’s married to a talented jackass named Kanye West.[/li][li]She has a bunch of sisters all of whose names begin with “K.”[/li][li]She’s related somehow to Caitlyn Jenner.[/li][li]She has a huge ass.[/li][/ul]
What I don’t know is why I’m supposed to care.
Pretty much me, except the Panama part. If it weren’t for SNL, I probably wouldn’t have known who KK is. Mainly I know that she took over where Paris Hilton left off, and I can’t imagine why anyone would give a shit about anything she does. Taylor Swift I know about, can identify her picture, and I’m sure I’ve heard some of her songs, but couldn’t name one or recognize one. She’s not played on the radio stations I listen to. Im in my late 50s, so that’s probably part of it.
The pictures I’ve seen of KK look, to me, like an average to a bit above looking girl with tons of make-up and too big an ass for my tastes. I think the mom looks way better than any of the daughters. But that’s just me.
Especially on the message board of a website that’s supposed to be about “fighting ignorance”. But I don’t think what we’re seeing is pride; what we’re seeing is people claiming that no, they’re not liars (and thus fighting QuickSilver’s ignorance); they genuinely don’t know much of anything about these people. Just reading through this thread, I’ve probably doubled my knowledge about them. Am I proud of that? No, but it’s the truth, and I can take pride in being honest.
The idea that acquiring a particular subset of knowledge is somehow “shameful”, and that avoiding it makes one morally superior, is nonsense that should’ve gone out with the Red Scare and dying of polio. However, the flip side to that, the idea that certain social sins are so widespread that no one who won’t cop to them is telling the truth, is even worse- the commonality of a problem doesn’t make it less of a problem; if anything, that makes it worse. But improving yourself is hard; it’s much easier to simply accuse anyone you think better than you of faking it.
I didn’t know about Jenner either. I’ve heard her name and knew Kim was related to Kosmo, Klown and Krap, or something like that, but didn’t realize the Jenner connection until the stories came out. One of the reasons that the NY Times is worth every penny is that they don’t spend any valuable column inches on these idiots.
I know more who Taylor Swift is, but I couldn’t identify a song if my life depended on it, though I suppose I’ve heard some. I don’t listen to that stuff.
When I hear “Kardashian,” I think of those Star Trek guys with the advanced neck muscles. Oh, I’m vaguely aware of the other ones, but only so far as they exist, nothing more. And now I know that Caitlyn Jenner is somehow connected to them.
Taylor Swift? The name is familiar, but is she a singer or actress? I have no idea, other than this thread.
I wouldn’t recognize Taylor Swift if you pointed her out to me, and if you asked me who sang a particular song, I wouldn’t know that, either.
I know Kim Kardashian is famous for marrying Bruce Jenner and now married to a girl Jenner. She has some sisters, and people online are all talking about the Kardashians. I know they have a reality show, but I’ve never seen it. I’m certain I’ve seen some Kardashians parodied in some type of Simpsons-like or SNL-like context – possibly Family Guy.
Now that I’ve admitted to being a Family Guy fan, I think it safely distances me from any claim that I’m some type of pop culture snob. I simply don’t give a shit about Taylor Swift or Kardashians.
You probably don’t know that Data’s cat’s name was Spot.
I have actively avoided watching any of the Kardashian-related shows (I hate reality TV in general as it’s pretty much all latter-day freakshows) but of course they’re freaking everywhere and so I have a lot of secondhand knowledge of Kim and co. That said, I was only vaguely aware of the Jenner connection to the clan (sorry, “klan”) until her recent transition story began to be publicly discussed.
I don’t listen to Taylor Swift in the car, however. Because I don’t own a car. I do however have a six-year-old daughter who likes and plays her music, and actually I like most of it as well (apart from that annoying “we are NEVer EVer EVer getting BACK toGETHer” song).
I now know probably five or six factoids about Kim Kardashian. I couldn’t even name any others. I hadn’t heard of them at all till Craig Ferguson started using them as the butt of jokes that generally amounted to “the Kardashians are sluts” [I’m not supporting that I’m just saying that’s the sentiment his jokes expressed]. I didn’t at the time know why he said this and I wasn’t sure if Kardashians were people or movie characters or what.
I know Taylor Swift is a popstar and I saw she was protesting about something to do with Apple the other day. I have literally no other knowledge of her. I couldn’t name or hum or recognise any songs of hers.
I had a boss with a daughter who talked him into taking her to a Taylor Swift concert. She sings country-ish music and has long legs.
You, Sir/Madam, could find different quality human contact. I’ve not heard a peep about this lady from human contact. What do people even have to say about her? Now I’m curious.
She was, however, on magazine covers in the grocery store check out lines. You know those ones you’ve never seen anyone buy?
Not so much coverage in the WSJ though. Or so I thought; I just searched there and apparently they have had the occasional article. Entertainment is good business, so that makes sense.
Nobody said you had to like the Kardashians and/or Swift’s music in order to at least have some basic notion of who they are. Evidence suggests that you do. That you protest so adamantly about not wanting to waste brain cells on knowing anything about them suggests to me that you already have. And if we’re being honest, it’s not like you were saving those brain cells for your turn at an experiment on the LHC. You’ve used and abused your brain cells in far more egregious ways than following some click bait about one or the other. Even now you’re wasting time and grey matter on protesting and feigning ignorance. Because you’re confusing “knowing” with “caring”. Whether or not you should care about them is not a question that was asked or an expectation that was set.
I know who Kim K is but I don’t keep up with her. Reality television stars aren’t my thing. He dad was a lawyer who helped OJ walk and she’s a world-class slut. Apparently the girls are good at staging extravagant weddings and then quickly divorcing.
As for Taylor Swift, I have my Swiftamine handy. I do confess watching that video of her skirt blowing up several times.
