I'm calling you a liar, Sir/Madam.

Wait, you mean the Kardashians aren’t those ugly looking aliens from Star Trek?

What’s weird is that in other threads I saw people complaining about how the Kardashians are EVERYWHERE and you can’t avoid them and people wish they - and Caitlyn Jenner - would just go away already.

That seemed weird to me because I didn’t think they were just around everywhere like abandoned plastic grocery bags. I see snippets about them on Buzzfeed every so often and threads about them here (usually very ugly threads). But I’m not reading celeb magazines or watching E or celeb news shows, so to me they are not in my face and I don’t see how they are in anyone’s faces.

So I dunno what the truth is. They are either everywhere or nowhere.

And I had to lol at glee’s post in this thread because he is an older English guy and knows all the basics that younger-than-him Americans refuse to acknowledge they know. And also he feels he doesn’t know enough to be well informed. You’re informed, man

Nah, they’re the ugly aliens from reality TV. But still raking in the quatloos.

I know who the Kardashians are, of course. One can’t buy groceries or a pack of, er, chewing gum without seeing at least one of their faces.

I know who Taylor Swift is and am sure I’ve heard some of her music because, although I do not listen to music radio, it’s unavoidable as background at the restaurant my wife and I frequent most, uh, frequently. But as they never say on those types of stations who they just played, I can’t swear to it. If she’s “generic pop” though, I’m sure I’ve heard it.

I think that understates her ability somewhat. She is a first rate musician who writes many of her own songs and is comfortable in multiple genres including pop, rock, and country. It’s not really fair to compare her to someone like Katy Perry (who I like, and who is one of the best-selling artists of all time, but who IMHO does not have the same talent or range).

This pretty much sums up my knowledge of them. I’ve seen the name around enough to get that much. When the board started discussing Caitlyn Jenner, I picked up the fact that there was a connection from some post or other. I guess the overlap between stuff that features them and stuff I watch (movies, anime, and SF series, mostly) is pretty low.

I’ve probably heard a Taylor Swift song or two. I may have even liked them–I rather like female vocalists, and have no objection to pop–but I’ve never bothered to look up who performed them. Again, I’ve seen her name enough to know she’s famous, but not really connected her to any specifics.

Not everyone partakes of the same entertainment or follows the same news.

I think I heard about Kim K here before encountering her in the wild. I know a woman who’s Chloe’s spitting image. I think they have a jail bait sister who’s maybe screwing a rapper. I know Kris Jenner is so fine I’d… well, never mind that. I know those second two things by osmosis I assume, and the third by having vision and someone (maybe the internet) showing me her picture. I’ve never watched any of them in anything.

I know Taylor Swift is a young cute singer, maybe 12 or so but I don’t know what type of music she sings, nor could I pick out any song from her discography.

You can tell it’s fake ignorance because it manifests as going into a thread and asking, “Who the fuck is X?” which is a question that could more quickly be answered by just googling the name. No one ever does that with any obscure names that are not embarrassing to know about. The point of asking the question is to alert others that you don’t know the name.

But you do. You know the name.

Agreed. If I had no children I might very well have no idea who Kim K is. As it is, I’m not ignorant of her existence. I didn’t know she had a sister, however.

Sorry, I wouldn’t wish to give Miss Swift short shrift.

I also don’t believe the people in this thread who are stating incorrect information, or spelling names wrong, in an effort to pretend that they don’t know who these people are.

Meh. Part of this is that some people think “pop culture” is some universal thing that shares the same rough borders for all Americans. But that’s a very provincial view.

Does everyone who knows the Kardashian family tree also know what the controversy is about Iggy Azalea? Or who Stephen Curry is? Or what Garth Brooks is doing with his career this year?

All that stuff is also everywhere you might choose to look for pop culture and equally prominent, from magazine stands to HuffPo. But if you’re not interested in or participate in some parts of mass culture, you wouldn’t know the answers.

Aw, fuck! If this is about the KK on WWDTM thread, some of us purposely adopted pearl-clutching NPR listener personas because it fit in the thread, while others ARE pearl-clutching NPR listeners who work hard at avoiding bubblegum pop media because, frankly, they have better ways to waste brain cells. The OP–I forget who it is, but I assume it’s someone I normally like–created a stupid, ranting thread without thinking it through first. I can tell, because I do it, too.

So OP, confess your sins, say ten Hail Marys, then go and sin no more.

Without googling…Iggy Azalea is an Australian rapper who’s style reminds me of Missy Eliot. Stephen Curry plays for the recent NBA champion Warriors and Garth Brooks is country music singer, who I vaguely remember may have been arrested recently. Am I right, what do I win?

Well, you didn’t answer the first or third question, though you did identify the names. I’ll give you a gentleman’s C.

My point was that calling Taylor Swift 12 or equivalent mistakes doesn’t strike me as prima facie evidence of putting on a front.

Oh wait, I misread the question. On Iggy Azalea: I think some people had their dander up because she was adopting a black style. I’m going to admit that I just guessed on Garth Brooks. I have a theory that white male country music stars and black male rappers go to jail for the same reasons: to advance their careers.

Ok, I’ll give you a B-. But if you complain about your grade again, you will be forced to write an essay about whether appropriation of black culture is bad or not.

The thing that never made sense was the idea that a nude pic of Kardashian would “break the internet” long after she became famous by appearing in a homemade porno. :dubious:

I live in Japan and am a male in my mid forties.

Here’s what I know about the kardashians*

Father was a well-to do lawyer. Maybe three or so girls in the family. One has a huge butt, and married a rapper (I don’t know who) or maybe it was a football player? Long dark hair. I have probably seen photos of them but I’ve never heard one of them speak.

Except for those of us who don’t see or hear anything about the Kardashians because:

I suppose this is the reason I am only vaguely aware of the Kardashians - no kids, I don’t see the news, I only watch old reruns on TV (and not a lot of that even) and I don’t listen much to the radio. I just have no interest in that sort of thing.

Now Taylor Swift, I liked her music when she was country, but her current stuff is more meh.
