I think Wendy Davis is a courageous and honorable woman, bravely bringing forth an open discussion about abortion to people too squeemish to talk about it. Her wonderful and fulfilling life after the abortions validates her choice, it tells women they don’t have to be afraid, that they can live without regret or depression, that abortion is a terrific choice in some circumstances and not always the end of the world religious fanatics like to portray it is. Its entirely possible, and she is proof of it, that women can have abortions and great lives. Plus, I commend her for personally staunching the tide of overpopulation by just a little bit, and by aborting the next Hitler, she saved the world from a legacy of hatred and evil so vile that abortion may one day be the norm just to prevent that horror statistically by abortion half of all fetuses

Is “Men’s Right’s” and “feminism” this board’s new thing now? I’m not defending “men’s rights”, oh good lord, far from it. It’s just that it seems like every other year we get some issue that produces way too much traffic. Because that’s what this is. Whether it’s blatant misogyny, “scientific” racism, JDT on circumcision, Der Trihs on atheism, somebody I forget on declawing cats, or goddman Cesario on fucking pedophila, we go through these cycles.

Besides, I thought “rape month” ended a while back. Can somebody post a calender so I can plan for the next cycle? This one snuck up on my me.

I dunno if it’s cycles, really. It’s mostly individual posters. Like, the whole “scientific racism” bullshit really died down a lot after NDD was banned. Right now we have a few particularly noxious shitbags, and when/if we get sick of responding to them or the mods get sick of them being around, this will fade into the background noise for a little while. Beats “creationist month” or “medical quack month” IMO.

I didn’t realize that Texas bill banned late term abortions. But Davis is on record as being against those. Her filibuster, as she stated, was to stop the closing of abortion clinics.

Do you have a cite that they were legal before the bill was passed? Because all the articles I have been able to Google say that this bill did, in fact, constitute a ban on abortions after the 20th week, along with the other restrictions.

Section 1.42 of Senate Bill 419, effective 9/1/2005, enacted by the 79th Texas Legislature, states:

(a) A physician or an applicant for a license to practice medicine commits a prohibited practice if that person:
…
(18) performs an abortion on a woman who is pregnant with a viable unborn child during the third trimester of the pregnancy unless:
(A) the abortion is necessary to prevent the death of the woman;
(B) the viable unborn child has a severe, irreversible brain impairment; or
(C) the woman is diagnosed with a significant likelihood of suffering imminent severe, irreversible brain damage or imminent severe, irreversible paralysis

Because it was already illegal to obtain a late-term abortion in the majority of instances prior to 2013, I believe this was tacked on to the 2013 House Bill 2 to ensure fodder for use against the opposition. Instead of seeing the opposition as critical of the new mandates, the uneducated masses are easily led to the fallacious belief that opponents of the bill must be in favor of the already illegal late-term abortions.

Wendy Davis made it a story, the public has the right to ask a few questions especially about public officials who have aspirations to be governor.

Public officials who have aspirations to be governor? Like Greg Abbott, her Republican opponent? Who has gone on record opposing Same Sex Marriages because they do not result in Natural Procreation.

(I do wonder at Abbott’s later work on Tort Reform, to ensure that others will find it harder to get rich off a personal tragedy. He got ten million bucks from that careless tree owner!)

Findlaw doesn’t concur -

The centerpiece of the new law is without a doubt the 20-week abortion ban which, like a similar bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in June, makes it illegal for doctors to perform abortions past 20 weeks into a woman’s pregnancy.

And since laws similar to the 2005 law had been struck down by the Supreme Court -

Detractors of this law may take solace in the fact that many similar abortion laws in Arizona, Georgia, and Idaho have been blocked by the courts before becoming effective, reports The New York Times.

Arizona’s 20-week abortion ban was found in federal court to be unconstitutional in part because the law would seek to ban abortions before the point of viability, flatly at odds with Supreme Court rulings.

The Texas legislature may have been starting over to set up abortion legislation in the state, including both the late-term ban as well as the other regulations on clinic facilities and admitting privileges for abortionists.
