I'm downloading music

Legally of course. (virgin music download website. I tried linking to it but it seems to be bloody impossible to do so)

I just wish I knew what to look for! Suddenly I have a searchable previewable (free) list of over 200 thousand tracks and my mind goes blank.

Try this:

Go to CS, and list all the CDs/mp3s you already own, then ask for some that are similar. Amazon.com has a “if you liked this, you might also like…” feature and the download service you’re using might also.

Some essential tunes:

Electioneering, by Radiohead.
The Spark That Bled, by the Flaming Lips.
Taxman, by The Beatles.
Where Is My Mind, by the Pixies.
You’re Pretty Good Looking, by the White Stripes.
Magic America, by Blur.
Minus, by Beck.

Speaking of which… Mr. Blue Sky by the Electric Light Orchestra.

Or perhaps One of These Days by Pink Floyd. Or Waterloo Sunset and/or Lola by the Kinks. Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Gimme Shelter, Loving Cup, Let it Loose, or Tumbling Dice by the Rolling Stones. I like the older rock and roll, so that is about the only area from which I can make reasonable recommedations. What kind of music do you like?

What I have done in the past is write down songs as I heard them on the radio or television, or at a club. It’s amazing that you can think of nothing when you are sitting in front of the computer, but the moment you are out you will hear a song that you have always wanted to find.

I wouldn’t want to advise you on musical choices though. I have everything from Mozart to George Strait to Nelly in my collection so I’m a bit outside the norm compared to most people. There are only a few types of music that I absolutely abhor.

(Partly in response to Jade and partly to the thread in general)

The realy annoying thing is - most of the really good music I hear is in situations where I neither know, nor can find out the name.

I am not exactly within the norm - my collection ranges from classical and clannad to prodigy! (only one prodigy track I like though)

Which reminds me. I’ll look for that prodigy track when I get home…

Try Evanescence.

Sure you can. Write a few of the lyrics down and then google them. That’s how I find some of them. Another option is to ask in Cafe Society. I found a song by asking people in there what it was. It was a song from the 80’s that had no words, had been featured in an Eddie Murphy movie and I just gave them a bit of the song, as if I were “singing” along with it. I had the answer in a few hours, it was the theme song of Beverly Hills Cops.
