Unsinkable Kitty Brown?
I’m going to meet her today! I’m sure I can post pics yet, but I have a kid who’s more savvy than I am, so maybe he can help.
Koshchey, after Koshchey the Deathless?
I also like Rasputin.
Oh, I like Koschey (or Koschei) the Deathless. Wish I had though of that for my newest guy. Well, I’m sure I’ll have more…
I had a rescue cat named Rasputin - she was thrown from a moving car near where I was walking. Her “beard” was a bonus. She grew up tough and survived a couple more events that ought to have killed her, in spite of my best efforts to keep her safe. Some cats are just like that. Its a good name, but might be tempting fate.
Most of our rescues who come to us in bad shape get names we hope they will grow into - Ajax was a terrified, abused black & white kitten who had a long and happy life, although he stayed timid. Most recently Leonidas came to us as a starved, sick 4-week-old who is growing into an absolutely fearless alpha - he has even our toughest cat fairly bullied at only 10 weeks old.
Good luck and congratulations.
Mharthanoiri pronounced whar-ha-no-ree (whar as in “wharf”) You could call her Nori for short.
Or “Tough” in Irish is “diana.”
Nobag.
I met her, and she’s adorable! Peanut butter and dark chocolate color, with some white. She looks a little like Mad Eye Moody right now until she gets that big blue starey eye out. I have pictures on my phone, which I can’t figure out how to post online, although if anyone can do it for me I can send you a phonepic.
And, get this, because it gets even BETTER–she has extra toeses!!! I was just looking at pics of someone’s cat who is the same way, and reminiscing about my long-ago cat Tango, who also had extra toes. When she walks, she sounds like she’s wearing tiny tap shoes.
** major squees for extra toes **
What about naming her Mad Eye Moody?
I think Leela is a really good suggestion, or what about Chauncey, which is an old English name meaning lucky?
Otherwise Lakshmi is a pretty name, and is the name of the Goddess of fortune and courage, plus she has often portrayed as having extra arms!
Trouper.
Hala - Kassite (pre-Akkadian) goddess of healing.
Bastet - after the Egyptian goddess of cats, of course.
Fortuna - Roman goddess of good fortune.
Ananke - Greek goddess of Destiny
Newt like the little girl from Aliens. Plus if anyone asks about the eye you can say you needed it for a recipe.
Travivanto. Esperanto for “survivor”.
Goonies never say die.
Forget mine, I like the “Mad-eye Moody” idea.
Ishmael.
But “Mad-Eye Moody” is a great idea.
Not that it matters, but selamat isn’t really a synonym for “survivor.” The word encompasses a lot of ideas related to well-being, including “safe.” But usually selamat is used like the words happy, good, or merry in English, in the phrases happy birthday, good morning, or* merry Christmas*.
Apparently there is no direct one-word equivalent of “survivor” in Indonesian, so if you look it up in an English-to-Indonesian dictionary, the definition is “orang yang selamat” which translates to “person who is selamat.”
Selamat or sometimes Slamet is sometimes used as a boy’s name in Indonesia. But I’m sure your girl-kitty won’t mind if that’s what you end up naming her. (And good for you for saving her.)
Having met her, I’m pretty sure her name is…(drumroll)
Vivian! Which is close to some of the translations, and it seems to fit her.
She’s not home yet, but she may decide to change it after she gets settled.
That’s a good name. It would be on my short list of kid names, but Mr. Neville has vetoed any name ending in N, as not going with our last name (not really Neville, but does start with N).
I haven’t asked him whether this veto applies to cat names as well as kid names… Maybe someday, if we get another cat.
I don’t think I’ll be looking for new cat names anytime soon, though. I’d have to wait till Luna kicked the bucket, as she’s even more adamantly opposed to another cat than Mr. Neville is. And hopefully she will live for many more years.
