I'm getting uber zits

For the past couple weeks I’ve been having these really nasty, bullet proof “zits” pop up around my neck.

They don’t really look or behave like regular zits. They don’t seem to form “heads” (white or black) and you can’t really see them unless you look really close or you’re looking for them, but they’re incredibly painful. They’re as hard as rocks and squeezing them doesn’t seem to have much of an effect, nor does astringent or zit cream.

I knew a guy a few years ago who got these all over his body and said if he squeezed really hard he could get “ramen noodles” to come out, but that guy was much stronger than me. As hard as I squeeze, I can only to manage to get a little bit of clear liquid out of them. I’m not sure if it’s even a good idea to squeeze them, as he had several permanent scars. I have one on the soft tissue under my chin right now that I squeezed pretty hard about a week and a half ago but it just turned red and scabbed over and it’s still there.

I had something similar on the back of my neck several years ago that my doctor said was just a swollen or clogged sebaceous gland. I’m not sure if it was exactly the same thing though because that one didn’t hurt. These are definitely painful.

So here are my questions:

[ul][li]I’ve gotten maybe about 5 of these in the last 3 weeks and they’re all within a few inches of each other on my neck. Why am I getting them?[/li][li]How can I get rid of the ones I have? Should I be squeezing them or applying zit cream?[/li][li]How can I prevent getting these in the future?[/li][li]Should I be worried about these showing up so suddenly?[/li][li]What the hell are they?[/li][/ul]

Is it on the part of your neck that you shave? If so, they may be ingrown hairs.

But generally: yeah. I never get squeezable zits. They never form heads. They just get red and sore, and no amount of picking helps. Usually I get them on my chin.

Hrm, Just from past experience. Many years ago, when i wrestled, I got the same thing around my neck, my shoulders, and even (gah) one INSIDE my nose. When I finally did go to the doctor, he said it was all staph infection and gave me antibiotics which cleared everything up.

The things I do remember about the painful zit like things is:
They hurt A LOT. Squeezing them was painful and often useless.
They wouldnt go away.
They were quite large, and had no real defineable head.

This may be what you have, but if they dont clear up naturally, like most pimples, I’d suggest a visit to the clinic.

Do you wear anything on your neck? A scarf? Something with a collar?

My mother had these in college, only they were under her eyes, near her cheekbone. I get them on my earlobes and #%(#%(#%*( do they hurt.

Uncooked bacon will bring them to a head. Since they’re on your neck, skip the bacon and go for Bag Balm.

Then go to the doctor and tell them you want E-Mycin pads. They look like any other kind of acne facial pad only full of antibiotics.

They definitely aren’t ingrown hairs. They are pretty much skin colored and don’t turn red unless I mess with them a lot.

Nope.

I sometimes get painful pimples like these, often in very sensitive spots like just in front of my ears, beside my nose, or on my neck. They never do come to a head, they hurt like hell, and squeezing them not only does absolutely no good, it often leads to an obvious and even more painful scab. The one thing that I’ve found will help is a prescription ointment containing clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. My daughter’s doctor gave us samples of it when my daughter started getting a little acne, but I think I’ve ended up using it more than she has.

Any chance we could talk you into seeing a physician? Even if they are just zits, they sound like the kind that could use an Rx to get rid of. :frowning:

I wish. I don’t have insurance though.

Are you any where near Canada? - If so you could go to a walk in clinic for $26 (CDN), which is about $2.50 US.

Oops. I just noticed your location.

I suppose if they don’t clear up any time soon, you could plan a road trip…

They could be Sebaceous cysts
