I'm Going To Punkin Chunkin!

I can’t wait. I leave town this Thursday to fly to Washington DC to pick up a friend; from there we’re headed to Seaford, DE to Punkin Chunkin!

What’s even more awesome is that this year it’s going to be hosted by MYTHBUSTERS Kari Byron, Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci.

How cool is that?

So…any other dopers going?

Congrats, I went years ago when it was still a small event, and just last year when it was a huge event. My advice: leave early, we sat 3 hours in line to enter the site just to park.

I went a few years ago when a friend’s catapult was competing. It was fun and a complete stranger proposed to me.

If I read right; there were 30,000 people there last year!
It starts at 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning. When you say leave early; How early would you recommend I leave my hotel (30 minutes away)?

We made the mistake of getting there mid-day and like I said, it took more than three hours to get to the parking lot. I bet if you got there early in the morning, it would be a lot less crowded and that the people who are there at that hour are more into the punkin’ chunkin’ part of the day. Last year, there were a lot of just flat out drunk frat boys roaming around, kind of oblivious to the giant catapults flinging squash into the air.

The first time we went it was still really low rent, with a LOT less safety precautions. You’d be standing in line for a corn dog and then “HEADS UP!” and a gourd would be misfired into the crowd. I just can’t understand what was wrong with the old system…

Have a good time and dress for walking around in some serious mud. We’ve had a lot of rain and snow this year and that field will be a bog by mid-day.

Thanks for the tip on the mud. I knew it was a field and was going to bring some leather shoes. Sounds like I need to consider some boots. I’m allowed to bring in chairs and an ice chest; but I"m conflicted. One one hand I know I will want to sit down at least sometime during the day; on the other hand the idea of dragging an ice chest and chairs around seems to suck too. I can’t tell from their map; but it looks like the parking lot (even the tailgating one) is a bit far to set up chairs there. It might be the only option. Thoughts?

If you have a vehicle, you can always bring the chairs and chest and leave them in the car if you don’t want to carry them around.

Last year, I think it was, they had Jaime and Adam. I envy you, I do.

Fling one for me, will you?
