Why? Trump kept complaining about Obama and asking for his birth certificate right until the end of Obama’s administration, and it proved to be a successful strategy. It stands to reason that Democrats should do the same.

Just look at what tolerance means. If I tolerate gay people, what am I doing? I’m saying that, even though I disagree with them, I will not in any way try to stop them from doing the gay things they do.

So, if I tolerate the intolerant, I inherently have to allow them to be intolerant. I have to allow the very evil I am trying to fight by being tolerant.
And, as I have posted before, I will post the main example I am aware of: cons. We’re nerds/geeks. We try to be inclusive. So we would let anyone into our cons–including the sexist jerks. In doing so, we were less inclusive, because women didn’t want to hang around.
We had to learn that, to actually be inclusive, you have to leave out the people who want to make the place less inclusive. They can only be allowed if they act as inclusive as everyone else.
Only the naive think you can tolerate the intolerant and not inherently tolerate their intolerance. Only the naive think that accepting the bigots is the way to reduce bigotry.

This really isn’t a hard concept to grasp. All you have to do is look to the groups germany doesn’t tolerate to see why it’s so important that we don’t tolerate them: they’re groups like the NSDAP, groups which are fundamentally opposed to Germany as a tolerant state! Groups who, if they achieve their goal, will lead to there being no other tolerated viewpoints. Groups that are intolerant. As Karl Popper put it when he first formulated the concept:

Guys, Clothahump has a valid point. When Obama ran for office, Republicans were justifiably angry that Obama had used a racist (and patently false) conspiracy theory about Bush’s citizenship to grab headlines, then opened his campaign with a screed about Mexicans’ being rapists and a ridiculous idea about building a wall across the border and somehow making Mexico pay for it. We all remember when Obama’s comments about how he accosted a woman and “grab[bed] her by the pussy.” It was shameful, but Democrats willfully ignored it because they hated Bush so much. Obama didn’t even release his tax records, a move that was denounced by both Republican and Democrat former heads of the government ethics office, but Democrats just didn’t care.
When the election came, Obama squeaked through with a marginal electoral vote victory and a sizable popular vote loss. (It’s surprising that happened given the peace and prosperity of the Bush years, but we all remember when Obama wrecked that by starting a war under false pretenses and the economy collapsed.) He insisted on keeping his business ties, turning them over to his children for day-to-day management, but he assured us that if the president does it, it’s not a conflict of interest. That was manifestly ridiculous, but he compounded it with some bizarre cabinet picks. I don’t have the space to go into them here, but the weirdest one for me was when he chose Rick Perry for Energy rather than, say, a Nobel prize-winning physicist. Maybe it wasn’t surprising, given Obama’s explicitly anti-vaccination comments on Twitter.
And so on. Mostly, though, the difference is that Trump is a fundamentally decent person. I admire Trump personally, and I want all of my family, particularly the women, to be more like him. Obama is just a self-aggrandizing, clueless loser. And more than a bit racist. Republicans had to suffer through eight years of a dangerously incompetent, racist, sexist, corrupt fuckwit at the helm of the most powerful country in the world. It’s our turn now to handle this administration with the same reasoned, graceful restraint they showed us.
Just keep the OP in mind every time **Clothy **ties himself in knots blaming every one of Trumps many, many fuck-ups over the next four years on Obama.

I don’t have the same faith you do. The Dems are notorious for picking some pretty awful, unlikable candidates. Remember Gore and Kerry? And they almost ran Hillary over Obama in '08. Imagine the disaster that would have been. They got really lucky that Obama had such a force of personality to win the people over. Bernie was almost there, but just not quite. I have zero hope they will pick anyone good/electable for '20/'24.
