I'm in Texas!

Seconded. I don’t like beer (I know, I know- blasphemy!), but I do like Shiner Bock.

Third on the Shiner Bock. Yummy!

We’re glad you’re here. I hope you get to poke around a bit before heading back up.

It’s our sworn duty. Like people who fight cancer.

You frac’n the Barnett?

If you get some time off, you’re not too far from the dinosaur tracks at Glen Rose but you’ve got to do it during daylight. You’re on the edge of the Lampassas Cut Plain and the views there and west a ways, like towards Hico, are pretty nice.

Not exactly the analogy I was going to use…

When my ex boyfriend’s mom was in Texas for a conference, one of her coworkers ordered Chicken Fried Chicken.

Now, to my New England ears, that not only sounds disgusting but also seems like a gastronomic paradox. What the hell is it? How do you make it? Why would you make it?

It’s a relatively thin, flattened chicken breast dredged in the same kind of batter used for CFS and deep fried, then usually served with peppery cream gravy (again, in the style of CFS). It’s very yummy.

The comments re the green beans with bacon and chicken fried steak have caused me to sort of miss Texas; I might revert later, but not in this thread.

To the OP: Try to find yourself some pecan pie; you might end up looking for a job if you do. Oh, try to find some real pralines while you’re there.

Well, the flight back was (and continues to be) a complete disaster, but Texas itself was great. The 15hr days didn’t leave any time for looking around, but everything that I did was an awesome experience.

Ponder Stibbons: Howdy yourself.
lieu: I think the lease was somewhere near here. It was only recently drilled, so it doesn’t show up at all yet.

tommndebb Oh the pool itself was completely standard and just fine; I went out there a few times; I’m just perplexed by the extreme failure of metric conversion.

Driving was an interesting experience. Things are mostly ok, but… there are two-way side access roads next to the freeways. When getting on or off, there are on/off ramps, for which the right of way belongs to the person entering/exiting the freeway: this involves driving directly in to oncoming traffic. :o Once on the freeway, you often have to change lanes immediately to avoid an off-ramp. The guy driving me to the airport said he gets lots of business from older people who don’t want to deal with things like that themselves.

I took a 5 minute walk on the edge of the lease and saw some interesting foliage, almost putting my face in to a 6’ wide spider web with associated spider. :o I later found some interesting things closer to come when I tried to find out where the few ants on my pillow were coming from, and found an ant nest under the mattress. :o  Given the climate and building styles, I imagine it’s hard to keep them at bay.

bump92.5 was pretty good. The food was really good. I had the best and 2nd best macaroni and cheese I’ve ever had, first at a place called Spring Creek, then later catered on site by a restaurant called something like Torri’s. I went to KFC and was surprised how different it was than in Edmonton. The pieces were way larger and crispier, and the sides included a decent mac&cheese and cooked corn, rather than the sad coleslaw, macaroni salad or potato salad choices we have here.

I drank something called Zeibock a few times; it was pretty good. For some reason, asking what’s on tap in Texas everywhere I went got me Coors, Coors Light, Bud, Bud Light and one drinkable alternative. I’ll expect that to be corrected by next time.

Mt time limit is almost up; gotta run!

ZeigenBock. It’s brewed by Anheuser-Busch specifically for Texas, to compete with Shiner Bock, the unofficial state swill. It’s unfortunately been very successful at elbowing Shiner out.

Those two-way access roads are scary even to Texans. They have them around Huntsville, where my in-laws live, and they freak me out every time.

You do have to watch out for giant spiderwebs, especially during a very rainy year like this one, but there’s no excuse for an ant nest in your mattress!

Spring Creek Barbecue is pretty good for a chain. Too bad you weren’t closer to the Hill Country, where there are quite a few world-class BBQ joints.

Shiner Bock is the best. ZeigenBock’s okay, but I’d never choose it over Shiner. I didn’t realize it was an Anheuser-Busch product.

Are you walking okay? I heard you let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Thank you for your concern. But I was outta there SO fast that the door flew off the hinges.
