Since the network where I work is my responsibility, I gave myself permission to post whenever I have time in between other stuff that I need to do.
My boss doesn’t care what we do with the bandwidth, as long as his email is uninterrupted.

What the fuck business is it of yours anyway?
I got that message once.
I wrote the administrator, “eh, it’s just a message board I like to check and it’s not actually about dope.”
To the OP: I only post from work. On company time. Have lectured others here about cheating and stealing.
Can this be considered stealing? Yes, you could make a case for that. But it’s no more stealing than taking 15 extra minutes on lunch, chatting about the ball game with the guy in the next office, burning a CD, or even giving it a couple more shakes in the bathroom just for fun.
But, to say that it is stealing sort of misses the picture. It’s quite different to be a computer guy than to be a bricklayer whose progress can be measured each day by the height of his wall. You might be working on a project that requires your colleague to finish a task before you can start your next task.
In a perfect world for the company, I would materialize and get paid for the exact amount of time that I work on a project, and disappear and not get paid when work was slow.
In reality, work forces aren’t that flexible. The company needs people here for the times that we require full capacity.
But, when the clients are on vacation, or using a piece of software I just delivered, or whatever. . .the company doesn’t require that I stare at a blank wall or continually advance my education by reading technical manuals.
When I have things that have to be completed in a specific time frame, I sure as shit ain’t surfing the web. And if it is a problem, then that’s going to be reflected in my annual review (because it has been with other people).
Another one self-employed. I get online frequently to check spellings for what I’m proofreading (company names, technical terms, etc.) and usually I’ll sneak a peek at the Dope when I’ve found what I’m looking for.
No thief here, sorry.
Shame? Rationalization? I know not of these words.
I seem to recall mentioning that I access this at work, almost all the time I am suppost to be working. thinks Yes, I stated just that, a few months back, in reply to a question.
So,
Are you impressed with Unaboard or Fathom or a.f.c-a cheaters that inhabit the Pit?
Are you impressed with SDMB cheaters that inhabit MPSIMS?
Are you impressed by SDMB non-cheaters that inhabit the Pit?
Are you impressed by SDMB non-cheaters that inhabit the Cafe Society (as if they’d let you in)?
Just who the hell are you impressed by, anyway?
I dunno. I think you have a working acquaintance with rationalization. You probably got the first part right.
Wow, I’m never in the Pit at work. The content here is not suitable for my employer’s delicate system. I wouldn’t be in this thread now, but for a case of the striped throat.*
I’ll post in every other forum, of course, if I’m on break. I get to set my own break times, of course, with the proviso that I get my work done and put in at least 40 hours.
*Please note: I am still contagious. Do not get too close to this post.
I work for a Fortune 50 company and could be terminated for cruising the internet. Now I do steal a glance at Amazon.com and e-bay every now and then, but I never go to this site because you know that the corporate spies would catch me just as I clicked on the “You Mother Fucker Goat Felchers” thread.
No way. I like my job. Or at least the money that comes along with it. And the profit sharing. Gotta love profit sharing.
I’m retired, and I’m not impressed that you are unimpressed.
I post from home and in class (wireless!). I posted a lot last year from work, and if I had a job this semester, I’d do it again, with no moral qualms whatsoever.
Ain’t none there. We tell 'em to head straight back to Great Debates.
Let’s see; I believe I am guilty on all counts. I have posted from work when I was supposed to be working, and I probably have lectured other people on stealing. You make a good point, Gus. I’m just not sure what you plan on doing with it.
Oh, right. First you guys fling threads from forum to forum with wild abandon. Now you’re hurling Dopers themselves hither and yon. What jackbooted thuggery is next?
My boss and I have an understanding. I get my job done quickly and efficiently and she doesn’t look over my shoulder while I’m doing it.
Besides, she lives in a different state.
My company doesn’t care. Really. They provide open internet access, they know that people are using it for personal reasons at times, and as long as we get our work done they really don’t care. Sure, there’s a policy somewhere about what we do online – I believe that downloading porn is prohibited (the commie bastards) – but I surf/post to the SDMB whenever the mood strikes me, be it from work or home.
Why yes, this is a pretty cool place to work – in fact, we’re about to be named a “Great Place to Work” by *Washingtonian* magazine for the third time.
Poor Will…
Heh.
I get to hear this one a lot. And it makes sense to a certain extent. If I pay you to make 19.6 widgets a day, then all I should care about is getting 19.6 widgets. If, however, I pay you to do a job that has a less objective measure, and to do that job to the very best of your ability, it would be reasonable to question whether devoting time to a message board is consistent with my expectations.
As for me personally… Meh. I might spend a couple hours a month at the SDMB, and generally do it when some wanker is boring me to death during a phone call. This is also acceptable use at my company so long as I don’t tell the wanker that he/she is boring.
I haven’t had a boss since I signed up.
Haw! I can top all y’alls. For a time I used to perform all my moderator duties exclusively from the office - many of them during business hours.
But then I’m in a salaried position and often work many “unpaid” hours. There’s nothing on my desk that’s behind schedule currently because I’m not spending enough time on it. Nor has there been for several years.
Huh? Why is it worse to sneak into the Pit on your boss’s dime than to sneak into GD or GQ? Less “redeeming social importance” or something?
