I’ve actually been in trouble for internet usage (primarily the SDMB) and have, within the last month or so, seriously cut down at work. Now it’s ONLY breaks and lunch. Before it was whenever I thought nobody was looking. Turns out that somebody was looking…
One very mediocre annual review with the phrase “agency policy on internet usage” repeated several times convinced me it would be in my best interests to assume that somebody is always looking.
I might add that when I was working in someone else’s office and the rules prohibited visiting message boards online, I followed the rules. Which is why I was mostly absent from the SDMB for much of a year, since I simply didn’t have time when I got home to hang out online as much as I wanted to. Oddly, the last place I work prohibited checking home email, even during lunch or breaks, but had no policy about message boards. Nevertheless, I only checked them – here or anywhere else – during idle moments.
Not everyone who hangs out in the pit is a scumsucking cheater.
My boss is a complete asshole, so I don’t give a fuck what he cares about posting in any forum.
In other words, self employed. My paid work is all in the field. My office is the same as my 2nd bedroom. If I’m posting, it’s because I’m at home on my computer. Kind of hard to post while working when I’m in the middle of nowhere installing new windows, or finishing drywall in an add on room, retiling a restaurant floor 800 miles from home, or staining kitchen cabinets, ya know?
I’m President of my firm, of which I am the majority shareholder.
My VP for Sales occasionnally tells me we should IP ban this place as a matter of policy. Then I threaten to fire his sorry ass if he doesn’t make 10% above quota this month and he goes away.
Only from home. Though I have an office, I work in the field most of the time. And by “in the field” I don’t mean sales or traveling. I mean in the field as in the wilderness
But in the wintertime, when the summer field work season slows down. I post on breaks, when I’m on hold on a stupid phone call. Stuff like that. With tacit permission from the bosses.
At my new company, I don’t know yet, I’ve heard it’s pretty much the same as the my former company, but I’ll see what everyone else does. So no, I won’t post without permission.
I’ve only been online since I was using my own computer at home. More recently, I go online at the library. I am completely and totally HONEST. As a matter of fact, I’m PERFECT!
Wait, that was a lie . . . so I guess I’m not perfect (or honest) after all.
But wait, I admitted that I lied, which is honest, so I’m pretty close to perfect after all!
I don’t have internet access at work (if I did, I’d scam as much as I could though).
I work at home too. I have my own transcription business, and I charge by the length of the recordings given to me. So, I’m there typing away on the computer, but the wireless broadband is on too. Right there in the background, beckoning me. If I give in to it, and start posting on message boards, then it means I’ll only be up that much later into the night transcribing interviews. I’m only robbing myself, so Idon’t feel guilty about it. Foolish maybe, but not guilty.
I used to be self-employed. I banned personal use of the internet on company time. Then I caught myself going to the SDMB way too often during work hours. I really, in fairness, had no choice but to fire myself. A sad affair, really. Most unfortunate.
These days I wait for Gus to go to work, then post from his house.
I was fortunate enough to have a supervisor (also a Packers fan) turn me on to a great site that completely punks Webs…uh…the site blocking software at my company. Sweet, sweet live internet coverage of the games when I have to work. Whoo-hoo!
I post from work all the time. I work at home all the time. I routinely put in 50 hour weeks. I’ve been promoted three times since starting my job. I produce, my boss is happy. He doesn’t micromanage my time, and doesn’t need to.
Fuck you sideways with a grappling hook. How dare you judge me, or anyone else, based on their posting habits, you festering turd. You know precisely jack and squat about me, my work ethic, or what I can accomplish during a day. Take your petty quibbles and sanctimoneous attitude and shove 'em hard up your ass.
Anybody else find it funny that GusNSpot hasn’t replied once since the OP?
I think s/he’s got some 'splainin to do, because it’s no fun when you post something like that in the pit and then run away. We don’t get to mock you as much when you don’t respond, GNS! Get back in here!
…And for the record, I only post at home because my work has no Internet.
Hey, thanks for the replies folks… I just got back to the SDMB so I’m not really running away…
For those that might have taken this a bit too seriously, I have no agenda, not planning on taking this any place special, I don’t throw rocks cause I live in a glass house, just thought I’d ask and I’d rather do it in the PIT as this type of posting is sometimes more offensive to a company than say, GQ. Filters for bad words and stuff and such. ( So I threw a few bad words in just to spur some replies as I was not sure a straight question would work and I did not want it moved as I was interested in this particular forum. ) ( you can tell I’m not good at posting foul language )
Also figured I’d get less outraged innocence and more honesty from this bunch of _________ posters… Bawahahaha
So, I was just curious and it is fun.
I was really expecting more comments about the speed factor. The boss keeps you hooked to a big pipe with his $$$ not yours, and you are on a soda straw at home and won’t waste your time here. Sort of, ‘I will goof off here but I won’t expend any real effort or waste personal time to reach the board.’
So, how many come only from dial-up at home???
To the few who copped a ‘tude’, I say, “Waaaaaaaa”
My current job keeps me far too busy to surf, and even if I had time, the internet there is heavily filtered and blocked. So I only post from home. I used to post from work all the time, though, at my old job. I was paid to be there in case something went wrong. When everything was fine (95% of the time), I was on my own to entertain myself. I used to watch movies, study, play games…whatever.
