I do almost all my posting from work (including this one). I’m paid hourly, and any overtime I do have to work is generously paid too. My company has a policy about internet usage and I abuse it like a detanee at Guantanimo Bay. Technically, I am a theif.
However, due to an incident here at work over a year ago, I have lost all respect for the people who make and selectively enforce this comapany’s policys. A few people here at work stole the majority of my work from me and my department and moved it to their group so they wouldn’t get laid off. Subsequently, the rest of my department has been laid off. The way I see it, they steal from me, I steal from them. I know it isn’t right, but that is how I feel. If (and that is a real goddamned big if) they give me my work back, then I will stop abusing the internet. Maybe. Bastards.
Also, before any one bitches about my lack of whatever, ALL my work gets done ahead of schedule, with better quality than anyone else in this company can duplicate (according to the customer too!) and in less time. I’m also responsible for a number of things that no one else can (or will) do, and I’m active in a number of groups here at work. Plus the Network Admin is a friend, and comes to me for help on stuff. Always helps.
Not everybody has a job like putting caps on toothpaste tubes and every second off task is fewer tubes capped and a loss of profit for the business. Some people are paid to produce X or develop Y, and as long as X is produced and Y developed on schedule, everything is cool. Mental breaks are necessary in such work anyway.
I post all the time from work, when I’m not too busy. I’ve talked to myself several times about it, but I’m incorigible. I’ve considered firing me, but then no one would be here to answer the phones.
I post from work. The policy 'round here is pretty loose–as long as we’re not looking at anything offensive we can use the internet for personal stuff. I’m expected to get my work done on time, which I do, and I’ve never heard any complaints from managers about any time I spend online. In fact, my supervisor regularly gives me high marks for productivity in my reviews.
Is it dishonest for me to spend any time working on personal stuff while I’m at work? Probably. Is it realistic for me to crank out creative stuff eight hours a day without giving myself an occasional break? Definitely not.
More good info … Keep it coming… {insert Homer Simpson}
Additional questioon: Who posts here that does not use a computer ( normal desk top or laptop hooked to the net cause everything has a puter in it seems like but you know what I mean ) at all in their work?
I post from work, but in accordance with policy–as a network admin, my job is “firefighting” primarily, and when there’s no systems development work to be done and everything is humming smoothly, I sneak a 15min SDMB break now and again. Makes up for the fact that I’m tied to the pager leash 24/7/365.
The device name I’ve given my Treo is “Tether from Hell”. I’m debating whether or not to record myself saying, “Thank you, Mistress. May I have another?” as a ringtone…
I read (and occasionally post) while working. However, I work at home and I’m paid based on my production, plus a partial reimbursement (less than half) for my internet connection, so if I don’t get any work done, I don’t get paid. Therefore, it doesn’t cost my employer a penny.
I come here from home and work. My store is very small, and usually only really busy during the beginning and end of semesters. If it’s busy, or if I have other work to do, I do my work. If it’s slow, like it is right now, I come here.
I’m really not doing anything wrong anyway…the only stipulations from the department on computer usage are: Don’t download any suspicious programs, and don’t visit porno sites. Other than that, it’s pretty lax.
We have a computer at Doc’s office, but it’s only for filing client info. No internet. I’m strictly a from-home poster, and from-home on everything else computer related, really.
While I don’t exclusively surf from work, I do spend a fair bit of time doing it. Yes, it significantly decreases my efficiency and is, basically theft from the company.
I’m not sure it’s against the rules though. I work for a pretty small company; me and my supervisor work in the same room and comprise most of the IT department. He surfs, I surf, we all surf!
I’m a home poster exclusively now. I have a dumb terminal at my new job and that’s it (remember those? I don’t think it even qualifies as a computer). Don’t assume everyone at home is on dial-up, either. I would be very surprised if the majority of poster here weren’t on some form of ADSL or broadband or whatever.
