Aw, Mom, that’s so sad. I know how hard it was to put my Blaze down earlier this year. It’s for the best, even if it hurts.
I have now added deviled eggs to my list of appetizers. I am serving green bean casserole 'cuz Mr Rebo likes it, but I could do without. No pumpkin pie, or sweet NOT pie - Buttermilk Pecan Pie. And Pumpkin Ginger Bread. Total carb fest here:
Turkey
Dressing
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Giblet Gravy
Broccoli Wild Rice casserole
Green bean Casserole
Canned cranberry sauce (yuk!)
deviled eggs
crudite
(my friend) Wanette’s corn dip
chile con queso
Frito Scoops
cheese cubes
summer sausage
Buttermilk Pecan Pie with whipped cream
Pumpkin Ginger Bread with Cream Cheese Frosting
Chocolate Pudding Cake
Still waiting for company to show. At least there is hockey tomorrow.
{{{{{FCM}}}}} Give Bernie a skritch for me.
Rebo, no pumpkin pie? Why do you hate America?
Coyote, my last cat, Thrakazog used to watch hockey with me.
Actually, I’m not a huge fan of turkey, or even pumpkin pie. I guess I must hate America too!
We’re having turkey with STUFFING, mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus (which I need to pick up), and I haven’t decided on dessert. I may ask my MiL to bring it.
Frankly, I could care less about dessert, but MiL always wants it when we do holiday gatherings.
I might make a sweet potato casserole. Hubby wanted me to make green bean casserole, but I put my foot down this year. If I have to make T-day dinner, I get to decide what we’re having. We’re NOT having that dreck.
Well, that’s it from the frozen Pacific Northwest. I’ve still got about six, maybe seven inches of snow in my yard. The streets are white, and I have to go in tomorrow. I tried working from home today, but connectivity to work’s network was awful. It timed out anytime I tried to do anything other than email.
Aww, FCM, so sorry about Bernie, although she’s had a good and long life and you’ve been a wonderful family to her. Many hugs to you all.
My daughter is doing much of the cooking this year, but I’m making pumpkin cheesecake (easy peasy, I hope :)) with graham cracker crust. One year I made the green bean casserole from a Paula Deen recipe, using fresh green beans, sauteed mushrooms and onions and real sour cream. Oh my gosh, that was some good stuff!! Very rich, though, made my liver do a flip.
We’re also having deviled eggs, steamed spiced shrimp and crabcakes (seafood-themed) appetizers; I had to pick up some catsup this afternoon for the cocktail sauce!
The wife of one of my co-workers was due to give birth last Tuesday; she hasn’t had the baby yet. Please send good birthing wishes her way–they’ll do an induction on Friday if the baby hasn’t come before hand, that is. I’m hoping that the baby comes before.
Hope everyone is at their destination if they’re traveling this Thanksgiving, and that all have an enjoyable holiday. Not that I won’t be here, that is! And hey, SpecialOne, it’s good to see you again! I’m guessing that you’ve been busy, as usual!
I will now promise to NOT use the exclamation point again in this post.
Just got back from neighbor Fred’s house. Mrs. Fred wasn’t feeling good and had not eaten. Well duh, her blood sugar was low. and :smack: I made her a peanut butter sammich, and that perked her up right away.
{{{{Moooooom}}}}
Our menu:
Citrus brined turkey
Cornbread stuffing,
Garlic mashed **N. O. T.**s
Roasted broccoli
Homemade rolls
Cranberry salad
No sugar apple pie
For neighbor Fred:
Pickinnick ham
Low sugar candied yams
Cornbread stuffing
Homemade rolls
Cranberry salad
Collards (they have to make them; we provide, but are ethnically challenged)
No sugar apple pie for her
Brownies for him
I’m going back to bed. Hopefully, no more pages to wake me, and the Freds are done for the evening.
ETA: I get tired of turkey easily, and I’m holding out for roast beast for Christmas dinner instead.
Would that be the mouse on your desk at work after the cleaning lady has been in? I keep my desk clean, all it has is the phone, the laptop and the mouse (I put the keyboard away every day) - and she still moves everything around!

Up, caffeinated, off to irk. Hockey tonight.
Thanks for the hugs, all. The next few days will be rough. But swampy, your comment about Bernie’s butt skritches made me realize that maybe she’s been gone for a while already. I can’t remember the last time she assumed the butt-skritching position. She used to do it most mornings when I was putting my shoes on, silly girl. Not any more. And when she’s sprawled out on the floor and I go to pet her, she no longer rolls over to get her belly scratched. Even when I was brushing her the other day, she just sat there and tolerated it. That’s not Bernie…
Realizing these things, along with her other behaviors, has convinced me that it’s time. She deserves better than an existence in the dark where she’s constantly walking into things or getting lost in rooms that haven’t changed in years. So around 10 today, **FCD **will pick her up and take her to Tidewater Vet. He said he’d stay with her till the end - I wish I could do it but I just can’t face it. I’m so grateful he’ll take care of things. I miss the beautiful young pup who entered our life 14 years ago from the safe animal shelter in Orange Park. She was a good girl and I’ll remember her fondly.
And enough sad. Life goes on.
Lots to do today - I think I’ll probably start with the eggs. I’ll make up the yolk mixture and put it in a zip bag. When I get to Mom’s tomorrow, I’ll just clip a corner of the bag and squoosh it into the egg halves - easy-peasy! And lots easier to transport. Once the eggs are done, I’ll do the pumpkin pies, then the lemon meringue, then the batch of sketty sauce. In fact, I better get the eggs out so they’ll come to room temp - as soon as I post this.
**Rebo **- is your buttermilk pecan pie recipe in the blog? If not, will you share? It sounds like something my spousal unit would love. And I just happen to have 2 bags of pecans in the freezer - from a coworkers fundraiser.
Daughter called my bro last night asking if he’d finance her house for her. He’s going to look at his various funds and let her know tomorrow. Even if we helped with a downpayment, she’d be required to have mortgage insurance for the house she wants, and that’s almost $100 a month, putting the monthly payment just about at half of her monthly take-home. Not good. But she asked him if he’d lend her the money for a few years. Meanwhile, she’s going to get certified to teach science in middle school and (she hopes) get a job in our county, which pays significantly more than where she teaches now. At that point, she would have a wee bit of equity in the house and she could refinance with a mortgage company and pay him back.
I hope he can do it. He’s got the money, he’s just got most of his money invested, and she may not be able to pay him the return he’d want. Yes, he’d charge interest and she’s fully prepared to pay it. But she’s also prepared to consider cheaper houses, even tho she loves this one in particular… We shall see.
Gonna read my funnies and Dear Abby, then get to work. I’ve just had a peanut butter sammich and I’m caffeinating. Gotta build up gradually, right?
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’.
Today I shall cook the collard greens (they’re better cooked the day before), make up the cornbread DRESSIN’, devil the aigs and give da cave a little spiff up. It’s clean but could use a vacuumin’. That should be enough to keep me outta trouble for the day.
Happy Turkey Day (Amurrkin) Eve Y’all!
Thank you! No sign of her yet
So… what’s the rules of the MMP? Any ettiquette or in-jokes I should beware of? Don’t want to tread on anyones toes (I’m a little heavier than normal at the moment for some reason…)
(and thank you **swampbear ** too!)
Herm.
Y’all (in collusion with Blizzard, who’s having a Thanksgiving Event over in WoSW) are making me want [insert berry of choice here] stuffing and things like that Sadly, those things aren’t like English wedding cake, you can’t send them in the mail and reach their destination as (in)edible as they started.
My usual supermarket has already put up the stuff to decorate for Christmas, but isn’t itself decorated nor have they started with the carols. The weather on the other hand is doing its best to look like winter: today, people at work are discussing whether we’re having “heavy mist” or “clouds at ground level”.
The only rule is that there are no rules. Except maybe: “We’re nice, dammit.” The main in-jokes are nicknames. If you see names that look nothing like people’s user names, they’re probably nicknames. Feel free to ask.
But generally, we’re just a nice refuge from…the world.
Hope the little one shows up soon, by the way.
We’re having Thanksgiving at my neighbor’s. She’s an excellent cook and appears to be having all the Thanksgiving standards. But no green-bean casserole. I like green-bean casserole. But not for Thanksgiving. Don’t tell swampy.
Guess I should get moving since I haven’t made lunch or had breakfast or, for that matter, even gotten dressed and need to be out the door in 20 minutes.
Hugs.
GT
All righty then - daughter has left. There’s only half a day of school today, so once her little darlings are all on their respective busses, she’s heading to the car dealership to learn how to program some of the stuff on her Sync system. No one has just a radio any longer - it’s all very complicated and menu-oriented. Heck, I had a hard time just figuring out how to tune her radio.
I’ve finished my on-line routine, so it’s time to move to kitchen-land. Let’s see how long it all takes, shall we?
A wee one showing up more-or-less on time and in perfectly fine health, with the appropriate number of appendages, sounds like something to be very thankful for.
And speaking of nicks, we need one for our ermitaña, preferably one y’all can type.
{{{FCM}}} – As a resident human in a household run by a pair of dogs* with 30(!) years between them (17 and 13), I know exactly what you mean Thankfully, they are both still in good enough condition that we don’t even have to think about The End for either one of them yet, but I know the day will come.
I’m especially thinking about how this will effect the Terrible Twins[sup]TM[/sup] – they’ve lived all their lives with both of the dogs around (granted, the young 'un only entered the home when they were just over a year old – but they don’t remember that)
**Nava **-- whatever nick we end up giving Hermette (good luck to you!) – no tildes!
Happy almost-turkey-day! (would that be Greece Day, if you are going East…?)
I love turkey (although, lately, we do not love Turkey so much!) - Does that make me a Good American?
*OK, they are in turn ruled by the cat. But he doesn’t count for this discussion, being less than 2 years old. It, too, is prone to staring at the weirdest things, for minutes on end. I guess it’s just what cats do (especially the being prone bit…)
ETA: **Tarra **-- what is the past tense doing in the bit about me being busy…? :smack:
In my house, any food with the name Paula Deen attached to it means one thing.
“Dear? Where’s the keg o’insulin?”
Sending safe unsticky vibes her way. Sounds like they’re preparing to send in Guido and Luigi. “All right, you. Your time is up, see? You can’t stay in there forever, kid. Come on out now, nice and slow.”
I don’t know what it is with the wimminfolk on/from The Foodporn Network, but just about all of them set me off. I can at least watch Rachel Ray move, if she’d Just. Shut. Up. I hates screechy voices.
Paula Deen and Giada are both so cloyingly sweet that I have to leave the room.
Use a plunger?
Da cave is smellin’ all Thanksgivin’ like. MMMMMMMM… Aigs are coolin’ down now and will be deviled in a little while. Collards are done. Later on I’ll get the dressin’ ready and prep the turkey. Should all be goooooooooooood!
Thus goeth the mornin’ at da cave.
Have you seen Aarti Party? She’s just too adorable: and that accent! The name of the show is the only thing that’s just. TOO. cutesy.
Guido, Luigi, plunger… I’m watching you.
