I have through the same cycle since I was eleven - I get bored with my hair, get it all cut off (and I mean all cut off - think Halle Berry/Winona Ryder style short), love it for six months, get bored, spend two/three torturous years growing it back, get bored…and the whole rigmarole starts over again. I’ve done quite well this time, having had the same hairstyle for about 5 years, but I can hear the mantra starting to go round and round my brain: “Cut it off - cut it off - cut it off”.
I don’t want to! At least, I don’t think I do - it takes so long to grow back! I’ve tried dying it, I’ve considered straightening it but I don’t think I could stand the maintenance, and all the while the siren call of short, hassle free hair is calling - my hair is such a hassle, especially now it’s cold and I have to blow dry, rather than let the sun do that for me.
So what does the wise and immensely tasteful Doper community think? So you know what I’m talking about there are a couple of photos of my hair here and here (yes, I was every bit as drunk as I look in that last photo - but it shows my hair quite clearly, which is the main thing).
I can’t provide photos of me with short hair, unfortunately - it was a while ago, in my pre 'puter days - so you’ll just have to take my word for it that it did suit me.
I have been through that many times - get tired of long hair with no body, cut it, get tired of short hair with no body, agonize over growing it out; rinse & repeat. My hair is now about to the middle of my back and I wear it up most of the time, especially in the summer when it’s so hot.
Your hair is beautiful! Have you tried wearing it up? You can find all sorts of barretts, clips. scarfs, etc and do all sorts of different styles.
Your hair is gorgeous. I imagine you looked great with it super-short, but maybe think something in between for now. I always had long straight hair, and every year I cut it a little bit shorter. Also, some color - highlights, etc. - around your face. I think putting it up like others have suggested is a good idea. I have about a million barrettes but now it’s a little too short to pull back and up without a lot of loose ends. With longer hair, you have so many options. Keep it long-ish.
Keep it long and play with it! I’verecentlydiscoveredhairsticks, and I’ve been having lots of fun putting my hair up in different ways. It’s down to the small of my back and I was on the verge of cutting it because I was getting bored with ponytails and spring clips. Now I can do all kinds of neat twisty things and shove a stick in to hold it.
(Yeah, you can do it with pencils, too, but sticks are way cooler…)
Poysyn, I did check out Clairol.com, which was fun, but none of the hairstyles really appealed to me.
Marlitharn, some of those hair sticks are really pretty! I do wear my hair up quite often, but it’s usually a case of practicality over style. The sticks look like they might combine the two quite nicely.
I picked up a hairstyles magazine on the way to work this morning, for inspiration. There were quite a lot of styles I liked, but I suspect they’re all ones that will be very hard to maintain yourself - great if a stylist’s just spent hous doing it, bloody awful otherwise. And can I just mention how annoying I find the proliferation of clearly straight-haired models who’s hair has been curled for the shoot in the “curly hair” section? I can ? Good.
I hear ya on the curly hair problem. Layers will add more oomph to your curls, so be careful.
Have you considered going straight? I use a flat-iron to straighten my hair about twice a week. I have long, very thick hair, so ironing it takes about 45 minutes–it would be much quicker with your shorter length. And it really makes a change in looks. I can do things with my straight hair that I can’t when it’s curly (and vice versa)–the variety helps me stave off the blahs. I also suggest highlights in a nice auburn–it would show up your gorgeous skin and eyes. Mabye pull it back, too…hmmm.
Question: how in hell do hair sticks work? How would they keep hair in place? Puzzled, but eager to learn in Chicago.
This page has several pictures of hair sticks in action. Basically, you twist your hair up the way you want it, and then you weave or “stitch” the sticks into the twist. Once you get the hang of it they really do hold firmly, and after that the sky’s the limit when it comes to creative ways to use them.
Right, I’ve booked an appointment for a consultation tomorrow, so I can discuss my options with a professional. I’m definitely changing the colour - I want to go red, with maybe some copper-coloured highlights. I used to dye my hair auburn all the time when I was a student, but I’ve avoided permanent dyes for years for fear they’d dry my hair out. But I’ve decided I’m being a bit precious - it’s only hair, after all.
I’m also considering getting it cut - not really short, somewhere between shoulder-length and jaw length. I’ve found photos of a few styles I like, now I just need to find out which ones are possible.
I have red hair! It’s fab! It’s still quite long, but he’s made the layers much shorter and sharper, so it has more shape and the weight won’t drag the curl out. It’s straight at the moment, however, and I’m loving the novelty of it - I can run my fingers through it without them getting stuck! Will post a photo as soon as I get a chance.
