I'm thinking it's time to have me an avatar . .

Those sites, like this one, are a little fussy if you don’t log in. And it would be weird to create a post with no context, that’s solely for the purpose of pointing outsiders to.

I’ll stick with Dropbox or Google drive.

Just a hint about Imgur: don’t post the URL you get just after uploading an image – Imgur considers that an “album” and the image is displayed wierdly cropped. Navigate to the actual JPEG (in Firefox, right-click and “View Image”) and select that URL, which will end in .JPG.

I personally prefer ImgBB. Simpler and cleaner interface.

But it’s worth creating an account there, even if you only use it a few times a year, so that you can easily post direct links to the images, rather than having to edit an html or BBCode link.

The only thing that’s weird is that Imgur allows it (free image hosting without even signing up) since they don’t really get anything out of it, but I use it all the time. I suppose the downside is that the images may eventually expire and get deleted, but I’m not aware of when or if that might happen. So far all images have stayed in place.

Actually, the one downside to anonymous uploading to Imgur is that you lose control over the image – i.e.- even as the original poster, you can’t delete it should you want to. I assume if you have an account, you retain full control over everything you’ve uploaded.

The Internet is forever! Imgur is forever! Cthulhu fhtagn!

Indeed you do. And you can nicely see all of them, too, making it easy to link an image again without having to reupload it.

You don’t have to let anyone know your username, either. You can publish or not publish. If you publish, Imgur becomes a form of a social media. And getting an account means you can comment on published images, and actually make full on posts with images.

But I rarely if ever use those features. The last time I did was before the site redesign, when one guy was doing reviews on Imgur.

So, do you use it for anything OTHER than displaying photos here? And if so, for what?

No, I only use it for posting photos here.

ImgBB supports Discourse, so it would be possible to add a button to the Discourse editor to easily insert images here that are hosted on ImgBB.

But unfortunately we don’t have an admin to handle technical things like that.

So, here’ s the image I want to turn into an avatar on another site.

I think if I could remove the background it would work okay. Can anyone recommend a tool to do that?

Thanks. I’m not sure I love the result, but that worked pretty well.
