Whenever there are problems accessing the SDMB, opening a thread, submitting a post, etc., I get a message saying “Page cannot be displayed,” and, in the bottom taskbar, “Cannot find server.” That’s the way it’s always happened since I joined. But in the past couple of weeks, I’ve been getting an entirely different-looking message that says “Network error.” Why this new development? What does it portend?
Those messages are completely different from what I see. I think they’re browser-dependent. I’m using Firefox 1.0.7 for Mac. What are you using.

I’m getting those messages at home and work (at a public library).
Not sure why this is happening. I have not seen those messages either.
The new error message reads thus:
I’ve been using the same home PC since I joined the SDMB in, IIRC, 2002, and I’ve never seen that message until the last few weeks.
The internet route may have changed…?
I’ve been getting Cannot find server errors all day today. Never seen the Network error one on IE6.
I just got that too, and no changes here either.
I posted a message about that back on the 27th.
I get those errors at work using IE and at home using Seamonkey or Netscape.
Doesn’t any Administrator have an explanation for this?
Are you on a Windows PC?
If yes, could you do the following and post your results please:
- Go to Start/Run
- Type “cmd” (without the quotes) and click Ok
- At the command prompt, type “ping boards.straightdope.com”
- Again at the prompt, type “ping www.straightdope.com”
- Again, type “ping www.google.com”
- Again, type “ping www.yahoo.com”
- Copy and paste your results here
It would help if you get one set of results when the board is working fine, and one set of results when you get the error.
Thanks.
