I'm using Spotify to "broadcast" music to people, what other options are people using?

For a while a friend and I did an internet radio show. We would put together playlists, record a few bumpers and then stream it weekly. It was great fun and I liked being able to share music with people. After a while He dropped out and I went solo for another few months or so.

Later I shortened the format and did a podcast, picking 6-8 songs and recording a couple of little inserts talking about the songs. That ran for a year or so until I closed it down.

Nowadays, I decided to try using Spotify, I have created a curated shared playlist that I try to update weekly with new content. Users who subscribe to it can just listen to it and every week or so the content is refreshed. The bonus with this option is no licensing fees or piracy issues. The downside is the lack of an ability to record any inserts.

Do any of you have any other ways you use to help broadcast and share your musical tastes with others?

I did not know you could do that. How do you do that? Are you a paid member? (I know very little about Spotify. I created an account when it first started but only visited a couple of times, and not for a few years.)

This won’t help you, but several years ago I made mixtapes on my desktop using a program, then uploaded them to the web for my friends. I more recently put them on Vimeo, then linked to them on a Facebook page I created just for my friends.

I like that Spotify idea, I’m going to look into it.

It’s actually quite easy and you don’t have to be a paid member. Just create any playlist and then you can choose to share it publicly. It’s pretty easy. The way I choose to use it is I have a single playlist that I just update periodically with new music. That way people can just bookmark that one list and get the new content when it updates. I also created a FB group for the page.

You can check it out the playlist here: Now Hear This... - playlist by Nathan Helgren | Spotify

The only difference between paid and free users on that list is paid users won’t get random ads.

Ssssooo… how do we get our original music onto your playlist?

Sadly that’s the one drawback, the music has to already be on Spotify so it limits what I can share. I would like another easier solution but I don’t have one at the moment.

Have you tried SoundCloud? You can create playlists there that link both to other people’s tracks and to your own tracks. You can’t link to external music, but there’s no shortage of unofficial copies on there. Generally, as long as you provide a link to where to buy the official song, such as iTunes, and don’t enable downloads, people don’t seem to get bothered about their unofficial copies.

That’s what I mean; my music is on Spotify. But how do I get it on your playlist?
