In Northeast U.S., Nemo finds YOU!

I just got home after filling my gas cans. So I have about 15 gals for the power generator. 15 gals will get us about 24 hours of power. Not cheap but better than burst pipes.
Here in central NH we tend to lose power during high wind events or heavy icing.
We have an 8000 watt unit. That allows us to run our furnace, well pump, and a couple of outlets in the kitchen and my little computer room as well two outlets in the living room.
Cable and Internet are the last services to go down. I suspect it’s because the cable lines are much lower on the telephone poles and protected from most tree limbs.

Good luck to all. Stay safe and warm.
See you on the other side.

OMG! Get your bread & milk! They said “snow”!

Bread & Milk

Part of our Pennsic camp gear - a zodi pressurized propane shower. The wonders of warm water

We have a small generator, though I was actually looking at this and drooling, we don’t take the generator to Pennsic because of the noise factor, and this is silent… though I was wondering about the add the rest of the 8 panels and it never empties the battery? Can that be true if you basically max it out with [frex] a laptop, a light, a router and modem and charging a cell or tablet?

Here in York, Maine, we have some light fluffy fine snow, about an inch of accumulation so far, it’s been snowing for 8 hours, we haven’t been hit by the heavy stuff yet, predictions are vague, “two feet or more”

My overall feeling? Meh… I’ve lived through the infamous Blizzards of '76 and '78, every “blizzard” since then has been a Meh…, don’t think Nemo will be any different in my area

Sooooo - we’ve got about 6 inches of snow already here in Augusta, Maine - been snowing all day, but no wind to speak of - what’s up in southern New England (Boston area)?

I stocked up on food the AM and am hoping we don’t lose power for too long.

How do you only have an inch so far??? What up with that.

Dunno, but that’s what we have on the ground, perhaps less than 2"

That said, we’re prepared…
Cars are all fueled up
Plenty of flashlights, batteries, oil lamps, and candles
The house, a 230+ year old New England Colonial, has three fireplaces and a wood stove
We have plenty of dry wood in the cellar
Water and food ready
Plenty of blankets for the beds

And…

A fully functional Generac 20KWhback up generator that kicks on 15 seconds after the power goes out, and 2 full 200 gallon propane tanks

Generator Good! All hail Generator, prepared burned sacrifices and fragrant oils for Generator…
Generator Good, All Hail Generator!

Sooo… snowed in until at least mid afternoon tomorrow… we’re all drinking heavily tonight, right?!

(actually only about 3-4 inches here so far in central CT)

You guys are just jealous that you won’t be rolling in the serious Weather Channel money.

Tomorrow will be my first experience using a snowblower - I hope it is relatively easy… and once I get my driveway and walkways cleared…I have to snowblow the chicken’s pen, or they won’t come out of the coop. The ladies don’t like to get their wittle feet cold. OH, if it weren’t for the eggs, I’d have another feather pillow.

I think I was 12 or 13 when I graduated from shoveling to snowblowing for the first time, and even that was more a matter of when I had enough mass to keep it under control rather than any particular difficulty of usage. You’ll handle just fine. One thing to watch though is if your area does get up into the truly ridiculous amounts - 18+ inches, especially - it might give your snowblower some trouble just because it’s more than it was really designed for.

How many BTU’s can I get from one very large cat? Yeah, I’m probably screwed.

Maybe 2" so far at my place. No big deal, yet. Channel 4 preempted Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy so the local newsgabs could say “it’s snowing” for an hour.

Be careful. My grandfather was missing two fingers and half a thumb from trying to unclog a blocked snowblower. Today’s top tip: turn it off first.

I have a similar cautionary tale about lawn mowers.

Good god! Our 250+ year old NE Colonial only has a dinky 4kW generator. We do have six fireplaces though.

I hope that’s not where you got your user name…

I intend to be a very cautious operator - no sticking anything in anywhere…

Well that is an idea =) We made beef stew on the woodstove, had one of the 2 loaves of bread and are too full for dessert so it looks like yhe butterkuchen is going to be breakfast.

I do have a split of nonchampagne [some italian bubbly white whine], some soda water and a nip of St Germain, which all go into an edwardian/titanic sort of cocktail I have been wanting to try.

Nope. Grandfather again, middle toe.

We went all the way to steaks and a bottle of wine, which is about how crazy we’d get on a normal Friday night, anyways. That was really inspired by a colleague at work who was so excited that while everyone else was at the grocery store grabbing bread and water, he picked up everything you need for pancakes, bacon, and bloody marys to keep everything going on Saturday morning. Of course, then he freaked out about forgetting celery…

If this all falls apart with massive power outages tomorrow, it’s going to be really easy to forget about how relaxing this evening was!

Boston TV keeps showing a “pivot point” where they expect the very worst snow to fall in a very localized area. It’s right on top of my house! Woo hoo!

So - does that mean the whole storm is pivoting over your very house? Does it make you dizzy?
