I’m not sure whether to put this in GD, MPSIMS, or the Pit, but let’s start it here and see whether there’s a debatable issue or cries of outrage that make it appropriate to move.
This New Zealand Herald story reports a 47-year-old man spending five weeks in jail, awaiting 27 charges, before it’s discovered that the person accusing him of having underage sex is not the 16-year-old boy “he” had purported to be in filing the complaints, but a 30-year-old woman.
It’s a bizarre story. Do any Kiwi Dopers have any idea what the “backstory” is on this?
I guess the first bit of bizzare NZ news was Just in time for the holidays! New Zealand bee semen. YAY!.
Other than that, I got nothing. Unlike the chap in the story.
Googling several combinations didn’t flush out a backstory. Apparently Karangahape Road is something of a cruisy area, as it is mentioned in “A Chronology of Homosexuality in New Zealand-Part 1”. Another site states that the area “comes alive at night”. I’ll take their word on that one, fer sure.
Don’t know the story, since I was out of the country then, but yeah, K Rd’s pretty seamy at night: dodgy strip clubs and massage parlours, full of drunks and dero’s, and streetwalkers of the seedier {often hairy-legged trannies and glue-sniffing rent-boys} persuasion. Kinda colourful, though - various business associations keep trying to “clean it up”, but it remains stubbornly resistant to gentrification.
“Fantasy drug?” That makes butyl nitrate sound a hell of a lot more interesting than it is.
