beleive it or not horrible histories are shown over here on the pluto version of BBC kids …
I have watched only epi one of the Brit version (Amazon) , and altho the house is way better, I did not care for the “living” couple much, at all.
missed the edit : I like it but there are too many people in the US version …does the husband ever get to see them too or just the wife? and are they trying to make it a B&B also?
I started watching the American version when it came out, and just recently watched the entirety of the British version. I quite like them both!
I don’t know if this is true for the American version but in the British version, the same actors play the basement people and upstairs people. There’s an episode where the basement people come upstairs and in the light it’s easier to see their faces, and it’s interesting to try to catch who is who. Also, the actor who plays Robin plays Sir Humphrey’s head.
Also something I read said that Robin being able to speak English at all is impressive as whatever type of person he represents would not have the same speech areas of the brain that modern humans have.
But yes I agree with the OP I highly recommend this series, whichever you choose!
The British version of series 4 started on BBC iPlayer in September 2022. The Christmas special landed on Christmas day.
The UK version is almost based on a true story. The house used for filming was left to a distant relative who had no idea about it until a solicitor contacted him.
The Americans are trying to turn it into a B&B, while the British seem to have just accepted letting it become what it becomes. The most recent episode I watched made it seem like it’s becoming a wedding venue.
I don’t see how the American version can have “too many people.” Both versions have eight main ghosts, plus the basement ghosts. The UK version has the Plague Girl who scares the shit out of the other ghosts, no overlap in the US version. The US version does have the “shed ghosts” – the Revolutionary War British soldiers, one of whom has a subplot (no spoilers).
No, Jay (American Mike) cannot see the ghosts, although I imagine that he’ll be able to see them before the series ends.
I really like how hard he tries…
Yeah, S2 E1, when he thought he could see Pete and it turned out it was just the Uber Eats guy.
Mrs. solost and I saw the Brit version first and loved it. I was fully expecting to be let down by the American version, but it’s very good too, though I’d give the edge to the British original. Haven’t seen the latest season or two of the American version since we no longer have Paramount. Unfortunately Ghosts is about the only thing on there I’d want to see. Good to hear that there’s a new season of the Brit version! When it finally shows up on HBO Max I’ll have to re-subscribe to catch up with that.
Assuming Robin was supposed to be a Neanderthal, I believe the most updated thinking is that Neanderthals were much more culturally and intellectually advanced than we used to think, and likely did have language.
Robin is my favorite character. I like how he became a NASA buff after learning of the moon landing. It was funny in general how the ghosts adapted to modern times, like when they were filming a movie in the house and when the scullery maid saw the dailies playback on screen she quickly went from “what deviltry is this?” To “they should zoom out a little in this scene to give it more of a sense of depth”.
Do you have access to any broadcast channels? Because the American adaption is broadcast on CBS on Thursday evenings.
What, be forced to watch a show by appointment, when the network decides to show it, and not be able to pause it, like back in primitive days? Heaven forbid ![]()
All this thing is kind of odd. One of the recurring themes is that before Alison and Mike arrived they were so bored that they told each other about everything they knew so often that they were all bored by all the stories: yet in the early episodes Kitty, Humphrey, Robin and Fanny had no idea what a TV was, only Julian had ever heard of a cell phone or the Internet etc.
The second season is airing on CBS right now, there are only two. I’d be surprised if CBS didn’t renew it for a third though.
Similarly, the Captain (in the British version) was keen to hear “the monarch’s” Christmas address but didn’t seem to know who the monarch was. Pat or Julian could have told him she was Queen Elizabeth II.
It was renewed already. It is actually either #1 or #2 sitcom by ratings.
I love how he lost his shit when there was a lunar eclipse, and all of the ghosts joined him in his worship ceremony (“Moonah!”). I’d love to see his reaction to a solar eclipse! (There was one visible in the UK in 1999, maybe they’ll go back to that in a future episode)
For Julian it would probably be only a 50/50 guess that it’s still QEII barring no further info after his death.
Surely, though, the previous owner of Button House had the TV or radio on at some point, or at least left a newspaper lying around. In other words, the ghosts probably had some idea of current affairs.
It’s weird how the headless guy quickly faded away in both series. (Although, I think the Tudor lord in the UK series did have an episode devoted to him). Do we know anything about headless Fonzie in the US version?
