Ghosts (US) Season 4 General Discussion (Spoilers in OP)

Ghosts returns to CBS on October 17 (appropriately, two weeks before Halloween).

Some spoilers have come out. I’ll put them in increasing order of importance. And I’m not going to hide them in spoiler boxes, else we’ll all be spoiler-boxing our discussion. If you’re in this thread (at least before the season starts), you’re here for the spoilers.

Spoiler #1

Utkash Ambudkar (Jay) is apparently BFFs with Lin-Manuel Miranda, and has been trying to convince him to do a cameo as … well who else could it be if not Alexander Hamilton. Assuming he’s put in an episode with Isaac, the jokes write themselves. Unfortunately Ambudkar suggests that Miranda isn’t fully into it, so there’s really not much to this spoiler.

Spoiler #2

Sam’s father is going to play a role. The actor hired for the part is Dean Norris, who’s known for playing tough-guy jerks, or tough-guy jerks who are actually big teddy bears. I’d expect Sam’s dad to be on that continuum, based on casting.

In related casting news, it appears that Prudence, the Puritan ghost who kidnapped Isaac, will be playing a larger role in S4, although I think we all expected that.

Spoiler #3

JAY IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE GHOSTS!!! I didn’t read any further in this article, out of fear that it might reveal how and when that comes to pass. But however it happens, this is going to be a game-changer. On the order of introducing Amy Farrah Fowler to TBBT.

Other spoilers have come out since Comic-Con, but I figured these are the biggies.

Perhaps Lin-Manuel appears as himself and any humor arises from how annoyed Isaac is over the Hamilton musical.

That sounds like a horrible idea. The one big advantage the American version has is that the husband is played by an actor that can totally pull off the “talking to people he can’t see” gag. He’s my favorite character because he trusts his wife so much that he’s all in on the idea of something he has no real evidence for.

I read somewhere that his character is limited because he can’t interact with most of the characters. That may explain why they’re making the change.

But that’s the very limitation that has forced the actor and writers to become more creative.

The first 3 series of Ghosts US has popped up on BBC iPlayer so I’ve got some catching up to do.

Please let us know what you think, particularly in regard to how it holds up against the original British version.

This really sounds to me like a potential “jump the shark” moment. Jay not seeing / hearing the ghosts is a major driver to many of the plots.

100% agree.

I actually like this idea better than Hamilton showing up. I think they would have to really pervert the universe to have the ghost of Alexander Hamilton actually show up.

Unless Isaac holds a seance…

Will do. I’m away for a week starting tomorrow so it will be a while before I get to this.

Maybe it will only be in his dreams, via Sass’s ghost power.

Another idea; someone has the idea for Higgintoot: The Musical. In reality the actor who plays Jay is able to rap so perhaps he could do it?

Ooh, that’s good.

Ooh, that’s not good. There’s still humor in the main theme of them having to hide the ghost situation, but doesn’t the added complication of Jay’s “odd man out” position create more humorous situations? Several episodes rely on his not seeing them. Maybe the Joes have calculated the humor ratio of funny because Jay can’t see the ghosts / just generally funny.

Whichever, I think Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar are both really talented, with a lot of comedic chops. I hope their talents will be showcased a bit better than they are in S3. Jay, especially, has some really dopey, amateurish dialogue at times.

It’s been a few weeks, have you watched the US version yet? What do you think?

Sorry for not getting back to this. I’ve only had a chance to watch the pilot and 1st episode. To me the US version comes across as trying too hard to be just like the UK version. For the more recent ghosts the US versions are identical to the UK versions. You’ve got the pants-less businessman(?) matching the pants-less politician, and a scout leader with the arrow through the neck. The couple episodes I watched were well done but I doubt I’ll stick with it.

This is not the first American adaptation of a UK series and I think that’s been common in previous adaptations (like The Office or Shameless). The first couple of episodes seem to be using almost the same script. But I think if you stick with it, it will vary quite a bit.

Ooooh, I might consider it. My wife and I are finishing our re-watches of Scrubs, MASH, and The Office. We do those shows with about a 2-year gap between re-watches.

We need a new one and loved the UK version, though we do think it had its ups and downs.

Maybe we’ll give it a shot.

I expected Patience to be more … demonic(?), for lack of a better choice of words. Still funny though. Patience! Patience!

I’m thinking about Station. Who is technically a ghost, too, I guess, now that I think about it.

I don’t need her in every episode, but I noticed today Pete’s wife wasn’t in the dirt chain.

What made me think of her was I was thinking of funny ghost ideas and what if someone died now with a phone in their hand? Would they be able to use the phone? Then I remembered we do have a new ghost and she died with a purse.

Remind me; who or what is Station?
