In Praise of 'Ghosts' (British TV Series That Inspired The American One)

That would be a very positive side effect of the strike.

I know; it’s a terrible thing to hope for.

I was on a long haul British Airways flight a few weeks ago, and naturally the entertainment system included a large selection of British movies and TV shows. So I ended up watching a few episodes of the original British Ghosts, and from what I saw I think I like it better than the American version. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but maybe like someone else said it’s that’s the British version is just a tad more subtle that the American one.

But anyway, I’ve added it to my list of shows to watch when I have time. Hopefully the writers and actors strikes will give me time to get through some of my backlog.

They both have certain advantages. The US husband is a better character. The first 2 seasons of UK Ghosts, all I could think was why was Alison with this loser and why do they have to have the husband so 90s sitcomishly useless. Alison (UK) and Samantha (US) are both excellent.

The Ghosts are great are both shows. But I agree the Brit version is a little more subtle.

I like the U.S. version quite a bit but there’s no comparison. The cast of the original are outstanding comedy writers and performers and topping them would be a tall order indeed.
The American show almost makes me feel like it’s either a parody of an American sitcom or the writers think Americans are rather simple minded. I find myself liking it in spite of the sometimes dopey dialogue and performances.

Well…

I agree. I really like both series but the UK husband just doesn’t fit.

He’s a good comic. I’ve seen him on Taskmaster. I mentioned upthread there is zero chemistry between the two leads. It feels more like they are roommates rather than a married couple. The US couple feel more like they are married.

I watched all the available UK episodes and I’m going through the US episodes. I’m pleasantly surprised to see the actor who plays Thomas in an episode playing TV Pete.

In the British show I didn’t pick up that the soldier was closeted until they brought it forward. It’s obviously not hidden in the US version. It’s more subtle and yet Issac is the better character. To me he’s consistently the funniest character in both shows.

I don’t find that at all. They seem like a perfectly well matched couple who feel like a couple. He’s a bit useless, she’s a bit scatty but both are well-meaning and sincere.

I have yet to see the US version, but I will agree that the two seem like good friends, not a married couple.

I have many friends whose couple-dom feel more like friendships rather than anything too intimate. It’s also how I would be, if I was in a relationship. Some couples are just like that, so for me it seems quite believable. Also, it’s just a sitcom.

Where can you stream the British version? We have Roku, but I didn’t see it on either Acorn or Britbox

HBO has seasons 1-3. Season 4 is MIA in the US.

Funnily enough, the episodes I saw on that BA flight were from Season 4, IIRC. I didn’t realize I was actually watching episodes that had not yet been released in the US.

She’s a Butt Ho. (Too bad they weren’t able to work a version of that into the US series.)

A what now?

Illumination, I have not.

The problem with the UK husband is that he’s not really part of the ensemble. The US version interacts with the ghosts as much as the wife even though he can’t see or hear them.
