In Praise of Marge Simpson

Eh, I dunno. The other family members, they have clear roles. You have the Star (Homer), the Catalyst (Bart), the Foil (Lisa), the Unlikely Overachiever (Maggie), and the Dependable Buffoon (Abraham). Even Patty & Selma are good for a laugh more often than not. What the heck is Marge other than a hopelessly out-of-touch grumbler with a weird hairstyle? (So is Chuck Burns, but even on his worst day he’s a more entertaining character than Marge.) Most of the time, it seems like she’s there mainly so Homer doesn’t have to talk to a wall.

She’s at her best when she’s allowed to actually do something. Start a massive protest against a cartoon, run a volunteer advice line, go to prison (and there were some really good episodes there).

Never understood why Lisa chose to save her in that Y2K Halloween episode. Given all that Homer’s done for her and Springfield, you’d think he’d be an obvious pick.
