In praise of patterned wellies

So often I find myself unthrilled by fashion trends. But I wanted to express my appreciation for what seems to be a recent proliferation of brightly patterned rubber boots for women. (Hell - if I’ve noticed it, it is probably a trend already on its way out!) This morning I saw a couple of plaids, 2 polka dots, and a bright green and a bright yellow flowered. They really add a fun splash of color to a routine morning commute - especially in this dreary March weather.

My only question is - given so many available colors and patterns, how do you choose?

Hee hee. I think they’re horrifying and will never wear them. This is coming from someone who owns five pairs of boots, too.

Aren’t they fun? They had a bunch of patterns at Wal*Mart, and even in my size, but I realized the rubber/plastic would rip my feet up if I didn’t wear sox. I hate sox so the boots are no go. But they would help a lot in this slushy weather, and lift my spirits!

ETA: Hee.

They did a segment on this on ‘How its Made’ (Season 11, Ep 1 - How its Made will soon have covered all knowlege of production techniques on earth). If I am not misremembering, the patterns are actually poly woven patterns, encased between the boot interior and a clear plastic exterior, which makes more sense than how I thought they did it, spraying inks/paints in a pattern on the rubber boot.
I still don’t plan to buy or wear patterned boots, however…

Isn’t it nice when fashion decides to focus on making something practical a little prettier, instead of being utterly frivolous?

I have a pair of pale grey Wellies from Hunter - I wanted a brighter colour, but I couldn’t find a pair in my size that wasn’t an obnoxious colour like pale pink.

I love them… They’re fantastic for trudging through the enormous slush puddles we get here every winter, and I’ve been wearing almost daily now that spring is here. They’re actually pretty comfy to wear, too, especially now that I’ve got some good insoles in them. Best. Purchase. Ever.

(and yes, I get mocked by my colleagues for wearing something so utilitarian, but I’ll get my turn when they step ankle-deep in a puddle in their fashionable non-waterproof shoes)

Patterned willies?

My sister has a pair that I semi covet, darling green background with retro looking pink roses all over them. I’d love a pair of patterned wellies but I live in a desert where the puddles are small enough to walk around and appear not too often even in spring, making wellies not the practical footwear they were meant to be.
