In praise of Thin Mints.

My fellow Thin Mint fiends will probably hate me for saying this (due to the potential for increased weight gain), but… last I tried them, Keebler’s Grasshopper cookies were essentially a dead ringer for Thin Mints.

When I was in Home Ec in junior high, we made Thin Mint clones - Ritz crackers dipped into melted chocolate with a few drops of peppermint extract. (This was back when Thin Mints weren’t black colored but were shortbread like under their chocolate coat.) I won’t say it was exactly the same, but it was a heckuva lot cheaper and really fun!

Yup, yup. And better in two ways:
They cost a great deal less.
You can buy them year round.

Now, if only there were an acceptible clone for Samoas. There used to be one – I think they were called “Yes Yes.” They were hexagonal with a center hole, but I swear the taste was the same. Haven’t seen them for decades, though.

I have three words for you guys. Thin Mint Pie.

Had some this weekend.

Check in frozen foods at the grocery store. If they don’t have it, hold the manager hostage until they order it.

I just talked to my cookie dealer. She is picking up the cookies tonight! I have already gone to the ATM to make sure I can afford my fix. Samoas, the Official breakfast of Madd Maxx.

Cooookieeeeeesssssssss.

Tonight was the troop cookie pickup. Briefly, I had 145 cases of them in my living and dining rooms. It’s now down to about half that and will rapidly deplete over the next couple of days.

I can speak with authority that Samoas (“Caramel Delites”) are as good as ever. The new Lemon Chalet Creme cookies (available in about half the country, I think) are pretty tasty also - we had to conduct a taste test just for quality assurance, of course. Those aren’t anything out of the ordinary, but they’re nice. I’ll stock up because every time they come up with a different non-mainstream flavor that I like, they discontinue them after 2 years  (and of course I’ll have to be more careful of the freezer door to avoid any door-ajar / raw meat juice disasters!).

Girl Scout cookies. There’s something I miss about the US. Thin Mint was always a favorite.

The lemon creams were the best- looks like they are back. But Thin Mints rule in our house, especially frozen and over ice cream. Tag-a-longs are hard to stop eating as well.

My girl should be calling with my cookies shortly. Only one girl asked for my order this year, disappointingly. I always make a point of ordering at least two boxes from every Scout who asks, and I always buy from the troop in front of the grocery store.

When we sent my brother a case of Thin Mints when he was stationed in Afghanistan, it went something like this- “Specialist! This box came for you. No, it’s okay, I’ll open it for you. Sure smells good. Well, well, isn’t your mom thoughtful? Hey, sarge! Come over here and check out what EJsBro’s mom sent us!” I think he got to eat a couple…

I haven’t been able to locate a local pusher so I’ve been without my Thin Mint and Samoa fix. There was a story on the local news about the change in bakers affecting the quality of the cookies, including the fact that some of the cookies distributed locally were stale or water-damaged. :frowning:

Huh - thanks for mentioning that. I googled “north carolina girl scout cookie baker stale” and got a hit from the N&O describing exactly what you said (stale etc.).

I’m relieved that the baker in question is not the one our council uses.

I’d offer to ship you some of ours except for those pesky rules about not selling online (and they’re quite explicit). But hey, if you’re gonna be in the DC area, PM me

Infidel.

My only rule is that I have to buy the cookies from actual girl scouts. Not from their mothers or fathers who pass around sheets at work - but scouts themselves. And so far, I haven’t seen any this year.

Thin Mints and Lemon Cream are my two favorite by far, with Lemon Cream inching ahead of Thin Mints.

Someone tell me if I’m wrong, but I remember when I was in elementary school (1980s) that the Samoas weren’t these thin round cookies with a hole in the middle, but rectangular bar cookies. Is this just my imagination, or is it the case? I remember because they used to be my favorite, but the round ones are very thin and dry (and as was mentioned, have a stupid plastic caddy in the box), and just didn’t hold a candle to the old style.

You’re welcome; the N&O is where I read about it.

No online sales? Well, that kills the idea I had about trying to find some place I could buy them online. I haven’t seen any Girl Scouts selling cookies at the grocery stores around here, either.

Keep looking - I don’t know what the booth-sale calendar is like down in NC but around here, we don’t start the booth sales until next weekend (the 29th).

If I weren’t worried about the damage they’d incur in shipping I’d sell ya some anyhow, after all our girls are encouraged to sell to friends and family  but unfortunately I don’t think they’d hold up well to bouncing around in the mail.

These links have dates for what I think is your local council. http://www.nccoastalpines.org/home/about/cookiesale/dates.aspx
http://www.nccoastalpines.org/home/about/cookiesale/customers.aspx (it lists Wake / Durham / Orange counties on the home page) so the sales should still be going on. Try phoning one or two local major grocery stores and asking them if they expect the girls to be selling. Usually midafternoon is a good time to go. Our troop also sells at Wal-mart so that’s another good place to look.

We’re a family of Thin Mint fanatics.
Our order of 10 boxes (9 of those will be going into the freezer for safe-keeping, and only doled out on rare occasions) are meant to last until next Cookie Season.
Of course, they rarely make it that long.
It’s just wishful thinking, on my part.

I did buy a tub of the Edy’s Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie ice cream today, though.
Haven’t tried it yet.
I will when my husband comes home on Sunday.
We haven’t tried it before, but I can imagine it’s pretty tasty.
I usually don’t like ice cream, but I’m pretty sure that I’ll have to give this one a try!

On a side note, my husband agreed that the Keebler Grasshopper cookies are a close match to the Thin Mints.
I haven’t tried them, but he has, and he says that the Grasshopper cookies are a bit softer, and a little less minty than the Thin Mints.
He loves the Grasshopper cookies, too, but not nearly as much as the Thin Mints.
