Right on all counts, Saltire.
Now, I hardly think that’s fair! I think we owe it to Saltire to give him/her a trial run before we start making sweeping judgments like that. I for one, welcome Saltire to the merry band and am sure that he/she will make a fine addition!
In all seriousness…Yay! More people! The more the merrier.
Lady Cheek is still waffling, but I myself hope to be there sometime around 7:00.
And I’m not a very careful reader. Sorry about the inadvertent insult. Obviously I’m not as smart as Aguecheek. Then again, who is?
Looking forward to meeting you, Saltire. How to recognize us: Aguecheek the smart and handsome will have a copy of one of Cecil’s books out on the table. As you walk into the pub, we’re usually sitting on the left-hand side of the room.
I am on the fence. Damn, it’s pointy up here. I may be there – I would like to meet Frau Thorp and Saltire, plus cider! Or my wife may invoke the privilege of quality time, in which case I’ll be at home making her happy. (This is not as exciting as it sounds, as it usually involves the couch, macaroni and cheese and some television.)
If I do show up, it will be sometime between 7 and 7:30.
When I spoke with inkysplotchy yesterday, he was planning on going. If you guys hit more than 6 people, I recommend paying two entry fees and splitting the team, even if you’re all sitting at the same table. Better than losing on a technicality. (This is not to discourage people from showing up – the more the merrier.)
Just to mess with you, last week we sat on the right.
I’m still up in the air about whether I’ll be there tonight. I’ve made five trips to the bathroom in the last three hours, just as a reference point. Or is that too much information?
K, so, it looks like my good lady wife will indeed be joining us today and coming straight from work, so we’ll probably be there really early. On that note, however, I will not be able to go home and pick up any of my Straight Dope books to display.
As such, I guess the only way to identify us will be by looks. I’m currently wearing a beige dress shirt and jeans. Short-ish brown hair, glasses, goatee. Devilishly handsome. And like E. Thorp said, we’re usually on the left-hand side of the room.
We’ll probably be inside tonight, so if you go around asking people if they know Cecil, you’ll find us.
…then second place has a hint of mint or something. The SDMB team, playing as Monsterpiece Theater, came in second with 29 points. The winning team had 31. I’d never heard of them before – something like the West End Gentlemen.
It was great to meet Saltire, E. Thorpina and Aguechica’s friend whose name I’ve completely forgotten.
I had loads of fun. I’ll surely attend again. Great meeting you all.
By the way, I thought we agreed the spelling would be Monstrepiece Theatre.
Hey! Where’s my post of hope-you’re-feeling-better to Cervaise and inkysplotchy? I posted it a couple of hours ago. What happened to it?
Well, OK. Take 2. (And call me in the morning?)
It’s there, above your last one. You don’t see it?
[size=1]Heh.*
Balls.
I just wanted to pop in and say I’ll be there tomorrow night. I’m not sure if I’ll have a lot of computer time after this evening, so this could be my only chance to post. I’m not just doing it to be the first to post about this week’s contest.
I hope everyone’s feeling better now, and that we’ll be able to manage two teams. That would be more fun, I think (as long as I’m on the winning team, of course ).
I’m an almost-surely, and shE. Thorp is an almost-probably. How’s that for some Monday night quarterbacking?
See you there…
Holy premature bump, Batman!
I’m in. I’ve yet to discuss it with Lady Cheek, but I don’t see any reason why not.
More to come.
I’m definitely in. I should get there in the 7:00 range.
I’m planning on attending tonight, but I was out from work yesterday with that damn persistent stomach bug and am kind of iffy tonight. We’ll see.
Well, I’ve been following this thread since it began, might as well actually start participating. What the hey- maybe that will mean two teams…
Wow, we’re gonna be huge!
Definitely two of us showing tonight. We’ll be going straight from work, so we’ll be there early.
Hmm. Why hasn’t Cervaise posted about the sweet taste of victory? Oh, right – because he was on the SDMB team that lost. Sorry.
Mmmmmmmmm victory. Tasty stuff.
In short: 8 people showed, so we finally played a two-team round. E. Thorp, shE. Thorp, Saltire and I were Thinking Capsized, while Cervaise, inkysplotchy, Aguecheek and Aguechica were Joanie Loves Karachi.
And although there was much sharing of answers, we did answer differently enough that our team pulled off a 31-point victory. And we split the pot among all Dopers, because really, we couldn’t have done it alone. (Bonus points to Saltire for remembering the DuMont television network!)
