I thought the burning question of our time was: Paper or plastic?
Starting to stink to high holy hell, more like.
adaher being astounding wrong again:
In this and other similar posts, adaher apparently believes the SCOTUS marriage decision means the end of Republican attemps to discrimintate against gays, and gays, now being able to vote for their economic well being rather than their existential well being, will flock to the Rebublican banner.
Well off with no kids, eh? I’ll have to let quite a few of my friends know that they aren’t doing gay the right way.
Hey, addy? Married couples pay *less *in taxes than do pairs of singles. Less.
Shit, the Log Cabin Republicans put on their nice clothes and politely tapped on the front door. I believe their official standing is such that they are permitted to deposit their votes in the mail slot and silently steal away.
I’m very disappointed that there wasn’t a glory-hole reference in that post.
Well, not really. It’s true that a married single-income household pays less than anybody, but married couples who both work and make roughly similar incomes are actually penalized a bit.
I damned near reported that post of his for trolling but I knew nothing would come of it.
Dumbass. Did I ever imply that the marriage penalty still exists? However, there are much better benefits for couples with kids than for childless couples and it’s hardly controvesial that childless couples subsidiize families through the tax code.
The point is that two single people pay more in taxes than a married couple, with or without children.
Or if you prefer, single people subsidize all married people.
You know, as soon as I find out some one is a Tea-Partyisque “taxes are destroying America” type my first thought is “You make $40,000 a year, right”?
And I’m usually right. These people THINK they know how people with higher incomes think about money … and they THINK they know how they would feel if they were well-off because they’re always on the verge off boot-strapping their way to riches and it’s Obama’s fault they aren’t succeeding. All those Joe the Plumber’s out there think they’re one clogged toilet away from being millionaires.
And when I was younger and poorer, yes, I FELT those tax increases. But it’s really hard to work up any outrage over a couple of percentage points in the tax rate when you have a solid six-figure income, because you don’t feel it at all. Certainly you could work up a little outrage if you’re ideologically inclined to do so but otherwise the increased tax bill is just like any other unexpected expense – You pay it, yes you would rather not pay it, but there aren’t any compromises involved – you aren’t even downscaling your vacations or cutting back on massages or flying coach, much less choosing between food or clothes, rent or medicine.
I would feel a little guilty about all these barely middle-class people fighting to cut social services that they are one misfortune away from needing so that I can have more bucks to cover my cruise ship bar tabs but they’re are so willfully stupid that I can’t.
So thanks for the extra cash, adaher.
You were proclaiming that married gay couples would now become more upset over their taxes, even though they are now going to pay less.
“Well, double dumbass on you!”
Also, the federal income tax rate is not the only factor that affects your individual economic well-being. There are other taxes and fees, which tend to go up when the federal income tax goes down.
But more importantly government spending itself makes you more wealthy by reducing your costs. It can be direct, through maintaining an efficient transportation network, or it can be indirect, by maintaining policies that reduce poverty and thus crime.
It pains me to think that prophets like this guy managed to make millions from their spectacularly wrong predictions, while our poor adaher insists on giving his away for free.
Oh, if only that were true.
How many single taxpayers are there? How many married taxpayers? What percentage of married people’s combined income puts them in the tax brackets that the article considers “married tax penalty” brackets? What percentage of them file jointly? What is the total dollar amount collected in taxes from married people vs single people?
You have an argument at that link you gave, and a handful of regulations, but no real facts at all.
Dumbass#2. You assume most gays will get married. Although no polling on this has been done as far as I know, most gays I know will not be marrying and never intend to marry. The principle was the thing.
So I guess the next fight is going to be letting unmarried couples pay married tax rates if they cohabitate.
I imagine your social circle is chock-full of the gays.
No, I’m not actually a white male liberal living in white progressive utopias where they can be all compassionate from their gated communities while making sure to pass ordinances that effectively exclude the “wrong” people. I live in diverse Broward County, Florida.
