In this job market, being tenacious pays off. (Finally! I have a job!)

Started as yet another common and usual call to a prospective employer:

Called to see if I could set up an interview, only to find that the phone number listed in the newspaper ad was wrong! (And it was a color ad to boot, so it was kinda expensive)

No problem, I will call the help line (411) and get the right phone number of the company:

The local telephone company gives me the number, and I reach: a fax line!

Well, when one encounters a wall like that one should give up, and just check other leads no? But not me! Besides this was a position that required Spanish and it was a help desk position, something that I could do in my sleep.

So think, think, think! Then I remembered some office experience: subtracting one from the fax number usually gives you the actual office number; like if 555-5555 (not a real number) is the fax number, then to get the office number subtracting one from it we get: 555-5554.

I dialed the possible number…

Got through! Found a number for the HR office, after some dialog I found out that indeed they were surprised at the lack of interest in the position, but I explained the situation, got an interview date, of course I aced the interview; I think my report on the errors, so early in the week, was one of the reasons why I got the Job.

So for all the dopers that are still looking for a Job: hang in there! And be tenacious!

Congratulations, and good work being persistent!

So it isn’t a job as a superhero? Too bad, you’d be eminently qualified for that.

Good detective work. And mucho congratos.

Nice work! I don’t think I would have figured that one out.

That’s great! I would have sent a fax. Congrats!

Congratulations! Luck and joy in your new position.

Congrats! Way to show adaptability (one trait I personally hold in high esteem)!

Congrats, that’s great persistence and tenaciousness pays off.

I found my current great job on an internet search, checking Printing Companies in my area. I went for an interview for one position, did not get, but was asked to come back for second interview with the President and Bus/Gen Manager (I almost blew off the second interview, but thankfully I didn’t) offered a different but equally good position, took it and thus gave the then A-Hole of a Boss that I had my resignation. Haven’t looked back since, and coming up on 3 years at this job.

Thank you all for your comments!

I am actually more qualified as a tech, but lets not talk about my secret identity :D, the funny thing is that at the same time, another job was offered to me that was also telephone support, but for house wares on a major retail store! I will have to turn them down since the pay was less and the size of it was overwhelming. (Cubicles all the way to the horizon)
I could have been like the Army of darkness’s Ash: king of house wares!

That was going to be my final move, luckily it was not needed.

! Que bueno !

They are lucky to have you. Are you a Gemini, by any chance? We are known for our tenacity (some say stubborness) and resourcefulness.

I bet they were pissed about the wrong number in the ad. “Hmm,
been kinda quiet around here, wonder why?”
