Cartooniverse, it’s an Asian thing to be completely and utterly obsessed with having absolute control over one’s hair. I have friends with perfectly straight hair who get those Japanese “magic” perms to make their hair … straight. :dubious:
Must be. She goes through Hair Irons like Kleenex. Okay. That’s not fair. But she has burned through a few of them. She hasn’t had the deadly awful damaging hair straightner because our hair person is a pro who doesn’t want a kid to have demolished hair at 15. He uses something much less damaging that does MOST of the job, and then the Fem-Bot irons out the rest.
It is true. She is for-evv-uhr worrying about her hair. Magic Perms, eh? Hmmm…
It’s called a “Japanese Magic Perm” and it costs a small fortune, but it lasts for half a year (depending on how fast your hair grows) and it’s like having your hair permanently straightened. I used to get it all the time back home in Seoul (where it was way cheaper).
Another voice to the group: your hair is beautiful, HazelNutCoffee, and thank you, all of you who enlightened me as to the reason my Korean daughter-in-law spends hours straightening her beautiful… straight… hair.
That’s it - you’ve perfectly described my hair! I’ve despaired for it not being straight or curly, but you’re right - what I do to it, stays in it. Perms take no time at all to set, and they stay curly until I cut the hair off.
Just wanted to say, this is not limited to Asian women. Everytime I go in to get a haircut, the woman doing it says “Oh, I wish I had hair like yours, it is so nice and curly.” (Note, curly hair on a young boy, is not really all that fun for the boy.) I tell each of them the same thing. “No you don’t. If you had it, you would want it straight. Every woman I know that has straight hair wants it curly and wavy, every woman with curly hair wants it straight. That is how you make your living.”
There are very few people that are happy with their hair. The fact that the same happens in Asia just tells me it is a multi-cultural issue, not just an indicator of something particularly unhealthy about American culture.
BTW Hazel, you looked gorgeous. If I was 20 years younger, I would make the 4 hour drive to Chicago and convince you to spend some time with me.
My roommate told me her grandmother got it in Brazil.
bundykala, I literally started back from my screen upon opening that link. Awesome photo.
Again, thanks for the compliments everyone. :o I did try it again the next morning but it still didn’t look right. I think I lack the patience and meticulousness needed to pull it off. Ah well.
