What could go wrong?

It is pretty much a perfect movie with an outrageously high quotability rating. I wonder if those who don’t like it also don’t like Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

I’m not wild about Monty Python.

I’ve never seen The Princess Bride. I have seen enough references to FEEL like I’ve seen it. I’m just not that in to watching movies. When I do it’s a social thing. So far no social gathering to watch that movie has come up.

I hope my admission isn’t in line with any trend like with the whole not having a television thing.

Nonsense. You’re just saying that because no one ever has.

I’ve seen it twice, but only because of social situations. The first time, two friends dragged me to the theater, insisting that I ABSOLUTELY MUST see this. The second time was at a holiday party; the host popped it into the DVD player without a word of preamble (not even a “hey, anybody up for a movie?”). What is it about that film that causes its fans to resort to force-feeding? I love Double Indemnity but I sure as hell wouldn’t coerce anyone into watching it, or act like there’s something wrong with people who don’t like it.

Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is “never get involved in a land war in Asia” - but only slightly less well-known is this: “Never go in against a python when laughter is on the line”!

I think it’s one of those movies where irrespective of its merit as a film - which isn’t that much, honestly: not terrible, but not exceptional - you get to feel part of a group by participating in a ritual, in this case by obsessively collecting and swapping lines. Think of it as a Rocky Horror for the internet.

That’s fair. I love the movie, but honestly I love it as a collection of individual moments and scenes more so than as a complete story.

The fact that there are similar minded people willing to trade one liners though, that’s a bonus after the fact. It’s not why I like the movie itself.

As you wish.

Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…

and yet no one mentions the pirate…

Seriously, watch it!

Murdered by pirates is good.

I haven’t seen it, but I probably will, at some point between now and death.
