Indiana Jews and the Temple of Broomstick

I think this is one of those things that is different for everybody - it would never occur to me to go to a food pantry/church and expect to walk right in outside of designated opening hours. Because I wouldn’t be able to - the doors will be locked and maybe there will be a buzzer, but most likely not. Either there is a service or some other event going on or the doors are locked. This has been my experience back to the 1970s. I have not been to any Jewish events in the past eight years but prior to that my experience was the same as at Christian events/organization services - I didn’t need to be buzzed in or accompanied for either Christian or Jewish weddings or funerals but outside of scheduled events, the doors were locked. As far as charities go, it didn’t really make a difference who sponsored them as much as which services were provided. Christian/Jewish/secular tended to buzz clients in when they provided social services such as counseling/substance abuse treatment/foster care and let people walk in during designated hours for food pantries and soup kitchens.

My childhood temple in Los Angeles just built a bullet proof safe room.

Temples in the US routinely have police presence and armed security outfront during holidays which includes Shabat. Some have it around the clock.

There is no comparison.

The only Christian churches I’ve known which were unlocked when someone wasn’t there doing something were in very small towns. My Episcopal church for example; the Congregational across the. street isn’t locked either.

My urban Catholic parish in California wasn’t locked in the daytime, until people started coming in and lighting candles and leaving them burning on the carpet, and then there was vandalism, and that was the end of the unlocked space. Even though there were randos showing up at Masses looking to disrupt, from time to time, there’s no comparison at all with temples. They are targets for murderous hate. Have always been.

I’m not sure I’ve made myself clear.

It’s not about after-hours.

The doors are ALWAYS shut and locked and you need to be buzzed in, even during events. They aren’t open during services or events, either.

:sob:

Church shootings happen enough that I’m not comfortable anywhere near one.
Yep. It’s not privileged gentiles as much as people preferring being alive when it’s over. Judgy. IMO

Antisemitism is a thing. Yes, Christian churches have been attacked. It’s still more of a problem for the Jewish community than for the Christian majority in this country. Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable to hear, but it’s true.

This is out of line. There is no comparison.
