Insering a JPG pic into a post.

I’m having trouble inserting a Windows jpg picture file into a test post in ATMB.

How do I do it?

Or would it be easier to just insert an e-mail link?- Me.

ETA: Microsoft Windows Version 5.1, if that helps.

Pics are disabled.

You need to host the photo somewhere(photobucket, imageshack, etc.) and put the link in your post.

Thank you.

Is this also the route I would have to go to put in a prfile picture?

You can upload a profile pic to the Board but it needs to be under a specific size.

Under the edit profile pic option:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 125 by 125 pixels or 24.4 KB (whichever is smaller).

Another possibility is Flickr, where you can have a free account that allows a limited number of pictures. There’s even a SDMB Meets Flickr group there.

Moving from GQ to ATMB.

And how about a rule against hotlinking a graphic?
such as http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/sdmb_images/reader/tsdbanner.gif

Basically, hotlinking is entering a link that only links to the graphic and nothing else. Some website owners hate this because you are using their bandwidth and you aren’t really linking to their site, just the graphic.

As someone else said, images posted on message boards need to be hosted on sites such as photobucket, flickr, etc.

We’ve not enabled the ability to put pictures into posts, for a couple of reasons:
(1) it would blow the server, and delay times would be impossible
(2) we’d rather people talk to each other, than draw pictures
(3) the server couldn’t handle it
(4) pictures can be really annoying, as we’ve seen on other boards, and
(5) the server would be unable to deal with it well.

Would it be taxing on the server?

I always tip my server and yes, they do pay taxes on it.

I don’t mind the rule against posting photos, and I think most “Dopers” feel the same way about this.

We’ve all seen message boards that are “photo-farms”, filled with too many graphics. And my favorite posting is to see someone quoting another person’s post (pictures and all text), only to give a reply such as “no”.

Images hosted elsewhere and embedded in posts would not tax the server any more than, say, this post.
An image tag is just text until it hits your browser, which then retrieves the image from the hosting server directly, without involving the SDMB hamster.

I just think of the ATMB as the New York Times of message boards.

Many sites have provisions in place to prevent hotlinking; I would imagine that’s all that’s necessary. The SDMB doesn’t have to put a rule in place, since the image hosts, by and large, already have.

And those that don’t usually don’t have a rule against it, and, thus, apparently don’t mind. It’s only a problem if it overloads the server, or increases their bandwidth to more than they can afford (as they use advertising to offset the cost on their own pages).

Yeah, this is the case with most message boards. Some do actuallly require you to upload the images to their server or whatnot, and it gets all convoluted and silly, but it’s not the norm, and certainly “taxing the server” is not at all the case. Granted, the hamsters around here seem to have problems with a lot of things that other boards don’t…

That said, there are plenty of GOOD reasons not to have inline images around here that don’t have anything to do with phantom server loads, and I for one like the lack of them. All the pretty gaudy animated flashing seizure inducing gifs were kind of interesting back 10 years ago. Today they’re just annoying.

If people really want to see images here without clicking a link, they can always load a browser extension like text to image and see they want. I don’t *think *that could perturb any rodents.

Thank you. It makes sense. For some reason I wasn’t thinking that the original test post on ATMB would be something anyone would be offering advice on. Then there was the mix-up from not knowing when I was previewing or submitting, resulting in a duplicate post (essentially). Of course in hindsight this thread should have gone to ATMB if a separate thread at all. It wasn’t really fitting a GQ. :smack:

And the title and OP were wrong. I realized later that I had never seen a pic here, except for profile pics (which were enabled recently). I should have asked how I would insert a link to a pic I received in e-mail. Now I’m just plain :o.

Since I registered with photobucket yesterday, I’ll try a test pic link on this thread some time today.

Wrong, untrue, and incorrect, if the server were not hosting the images.

Agree with the other two reasons, however.

Test to insert a (sample photo) photobucket pic link:

HERE IT IS!

ETA: It worked in preview, so it should work in this as a post. I’m sure there are ways to enlarge the Sample pic, but I’m new at this and could use some advice.
