Maybe the first strategy we have to rethink is - how do we stop them smarties opening this thread and discovering who we are and what we’re thinking [well, what passes for thinking in this elite group, anyhow]??
Does it have a question in the title? Is it in GD or GQ? Does it mention God, Israel or Republicans? I rest my case.

I know, I need to be an official Doper first, but this is a big reason why I haven’t joined yet. I’m scared of joining and then everyone quickly learning how dumb I am and not wanting to communicate with me.
So far in my posts folks generally ignore me or get offended at what I write. I don’t mean to be offensive, I’m not very good at intoning mood in my writing.

I noticed that some people early in the thread point specifically to the works of Stephen Hawking when claiming ignorance.
You must remember that, just because the author, publisher, and various paid reviewers all say that Hawking’s general audience books explain various advanced physics phenomena in an easy-to-read-and-understand format, it doesn’t mean they actually DO.
I understand most of the concepts presented in his books, and I find his prose to be nearly impenetrable.
So before you write yourself off, remember there’s a difference between knowing something, and knowing how to explain it clearly.

I more or less stopped posting months ago because I got tired of feeling like a jerk in front of my (supposed) peers.
My D’oh moment – I didn’t realize that the earlier references to Hawking meant Stephen Hawking! I’ve heard of him , but just didn’t make the connection.
Also , I’m probably the only one here who thought that “username” meant real name.
Otherwise , I’m too intelligent to qualify for membership in this club.
I’m not sure if I’m dumb enough or not because most of my posts don’t get responses. I don’t know how to bold people’s names but I did learn how to quote threads recently.
I’m wondering (which may disqualify me immediately) if we of this thread have the EQ and all the others have the IQ?

First, I’ve always misread the word “unite” as “untie”. Strangely enough, I read “untie” as “unite”! (What’s the deal with punctuation and quotations again?)

I’ll read the other, scary forums, but there are big, angry kids there, who are VERY serious and play hardball with great vigour. I’m just a wimp who thinks that just maybe people can get along. I’ve seen some wonderful threads in MPSIMS.

I adore the SDMB, mostly because it helps to fill the niche of intellectual stimulation for me that was once filled with college, and for that I am very gratefull. However, I too have felt like a bastard step-child on many occassions. I’ve always considered myself to have a decent vocabulary, but my spelling, punctuation, and grammar simply suck. I’ve killed enough threads to consider hiring myself out as a hit woman. I’ve fumbled and stumbled around in GQ and GD enough in my short tenure, that I’d be lucky to have (maybe) 2% of the teeming millions willing to even read any threads that I start. But I’m ok with that.
So what are we going to do if everyone on the boards self-identifies with this thread?

None of us are ever funny or clever. It doesn’t stop us from keying in whatever brain fart blows through the empty space between our collective ears.

The story of my life! Count me in…the hideously informed people in GD scare me. I’m used to people accepting what I say as Gospel and not questioning it (I am a teacher.) This “Back up your position with* facts*” crap is for the birds! 
You haven’t been here long enough to be getting cute. And Dewdropgirl, the way you spelled ‘smart’ qualifies you.
I don’t think being funny or clever disqualifies anyone from membership in the IIDU, any more than choosing the name of an ancient philosopher as a user name does. Some of us are darn funny – maybe not consistently, maybe not at the intellectual level of coldfire or fenris – but we are capable of getting in a good one now and then.
I suspect that many of us have “idiot savant” type skills – certain things that we are inexplicably very good at. I, for example, am an extremely good programmer. But I cannot intelligentally discuss technology, and information concerning geography, history, philosophy, politics, …, simply will not stay in my brain.
I hope that we of the IIDU can accept and encourage the few skills and talents that our members have. It would be a shame for this fine organization to turn into a Great Debate over who’s dumb enough to belong.
I sure hope that was all said tongue in cheek.
