"Intellectual Dark Web" Stupidity Omnibus

The “Intellectual Dark Web” is a group of largely right-wing, conservative, and reactionary thinkers. They are almost all cishet white men; their main qualifying factor is being willing to “Speak hard truths” (T/N: constantly JAQ off about questions solved ages ago at an embarrassingly low intellectual level) that “violate PC taboo” (T/N: generally be dicks to women, minorities, the poor, or anyone who isn’t a rich cishet white dude) and shamelessly argue for “free speech” (T/N: the right to say anything to anyone anywhere with no consequences or blowback) and “moderate political centrism” (T/N: somewhere between Bush-Era conservatism and full-blown fascism).

Some prominent figures include:

  • Sam Harris
  • Jordan Peterson
  • Joe Rogan
  • Dave Rubin
  • Carl “Sargon of Akkad” Benjamin

But in general, other, less prominent members of the same circles are welcome. Basically, right-wing reactionaries who claim to be centrists or liberals - and whose shit the media keeps fucking buying.

So let’s start the thread off right.

In recent news, Sam Harris deleted his Patreon (and Rubin and Peterson threatened to) because Patreon banned Sargon over an insane rant where he told a nazi in his comments section that he was, quote, “acting like a nigger”. He somehow thinks the context means that this is just inoffensively criticizing racists, and isn’t racist at all. In another thread (which I am creating this one as an offshoot of, with hopefully less taint from the other), another user called me out for calling Sargon a Nazi. Meanwhile, here’s Sargon, ban-dodging on Twitter, explaining how he feels about Bolsenaro murdering LGBT activists:

https://twitter.com/ToymakerHypno/status/1081173460787843072

Context:

Sargon: Bolsenaro, day 1. This is the future the left chose. People could have adapted to a “third gender” over time but you had to try and take the two existing ones away out of spite. Now the backlash is here.

Rando fan: I just cant get on board with Bolsenaro, he would rather his son be dead than gay is over the line for me, literally beating the gayness out of somebody is ridiculous.

Sargon: Yup. Brazil isn’t a friendly place. Now you’re going to get Bolsonaro helicopter memes as he murders leftists. I’m not going to shed a tear. And dumbass leftists are in my mentions pretending they don’t understand what I mean. Liars, scoundrels and cowards.

He then spent the next hundred or so tweets desperately backpedaling and explaining, “No, I’m not a sociopath, I just think the left is to blame for Bolsonaro winning so it’s their fault he’s killing gay people.” Which is just so much better. Personally, I’d blame the fascist and the people who put the fascist in power, but what do I know - I’m not a vaunted member of the “Intellectual Dark Web”.

Remember when we all used to be able to dream that the internet would lead to bad ideas dying out and good ideas triumphing? I remember. What got that thought in my head was a video called “The Internet is where religion comes to die”.

The person who made that video has now made more than 50 videos complaining about an online video game critic he doesn’t like very much. He’s made more videos dishonestly attacking a Z-list online celebrity who made a video series he doesn’t like than he ever made attacking religion. It’s not that bad ideas die on the internet. It’s that religion’s method of propagation was ill-suited to the internet. Bad ideas do just fine.

Given that this group is depressingly influential and unbelievably stupid/evil, there should be plenty of grist for this particular mill. :frowning:

Who cares about their skin color, their gender, or their sexual orientation? Why are you bringing those irrelevant variables into this discussion?

We have enough trolls on this board, and now you want to recap an entire community of them?

That just gives them power over you.

I get you want to vent, but exposing those losers just spreads their filth, and they might get a few more followers from here.

The irony here is that a lot of these folks rose to prominence as part of the 'New Atheism" which was fine until they showed how reactionary they could be when women and minorities were given excuses for their bad baheavior rather than promises to do better.

Then Gamergate came along and gave these guys quite a boost.

Tim Pool

Trolololol!

Oops, I should clarify. This guy has been saying he’s been a Bernie supporter or that he’d love to get behind someone like Bernie but [the people he’s vilifying in almost all his videos] are making it a wee bit too difficult for him.

What does the color of their skin or sheets have to do with anything?

“Why did you make me hit you?”

Sargon was locked of Patreon for calling white nationalists “white niggers” on a stream on another channel, not in his comments, and it was white niggers, not “acting like niggers”. You could at least check your facts before going on a rant.

The space these people occupy very often comes down to “Too smart/secular to support Trump/the religious right, too shitty and bigoted to support anything remotely liberal.” And it seems like it’s often a lot easier to split that difference in favor of the bigotry.

I’m dreadfully sorry; clearly my misrepresentation of the facts and unwillingness to look it up again changes what he says drastically. Clearly, the difference between “acting like niggers” and “white niggers” is significant and serious, and I shouldn’t have slandered the good name of Carl “Leftists are responsible for Bolsonaro killing leftists” Benjamin.

I thought it was: Carl “I can’t be bothered to watch a video longer than 5 minutes long that destroys my arguments, but here’s a 50 minute video of me strawmanning what I think your claim was” Benjamin?

Really, Carl “How do you even lose a debate to Richard Spencer” Benjamin is so stupid that I’d feel hesitant to even bring him up if it weren’t for how obviously influential him and his brand were to the IDW, and the fact that actual international figures like Harris and Peterson seem to take him seriously.

I see you conveniently left out that “deep thinker” Scott Alexander. You should also track all the stupid shit he does too.

This thread is bullshit. The IDW isn’t like Anonymous. You can’t just wish your way in, and Sargon isn’t in the IDW.

The reason Harris, Rubin, and Peterson quit Patreon after Patreon deleted Sargon is really simple. Patreon’s ToS said they could ban you if you put “objectionable content” on Patreon. That video where Sargon said the n word was NOT posted on Patreon. It was posted on YouTube on someone else’s channel. In short, they banned him for doing something which wasn’t prohibited in their TOS. They changed the rules on him, in other words.

Harris, Rubin, and Peterson thought “If they can change the rules on him, they can do the same to us”. So they left. Perfectly sensible. The fact Harris, Rubin, and Peterson take what was done to him seriously doesn’t mean they take him seriously.

Also, the IDW isn’t right wing. Harris and Rogan are both left-leaning Democrats. Bret and Eric Weinstein are progressive. Maajid Nawaz ran for UK Parliament as a Liberal Democrat. Jordan Peterson is a right-leaning centrist. Dave Rubin is left-libertarian. The only two IDW members who are proper right wing are Ben Shapiro and Douglas Murray, and Murray is English so his conservatism is still moderate by American standards.

I had never heard of the IDW. Probably worse than the Illuminati and Masons, though.

*"I get the appeal of the I.D.W. I share the belief that our institutional gatekeepers need to crack the gates open much more. I don’t, however, want to live in a culture where there are no gatekeepers at all. Given how influential this group is becoming, I can’t be alone in hoping the I.D.W. finds a way to eschew the cranks, grifters and bigots and sticks to the truth-seeking.

“Some say the I.D.W. is dangerous,” Ms. Heying said. “But the only way you can construe a group of intellectuals talking to each other as dangerous is if you are scared of what they might discover.”"*

This is the spin. It’s actually kind of laughable - Rubin, left-libertarian? Rogan, left-leaning democrat? Peterson deserves a more thorough treatment when I’m not on my phone, but looking at his philosophy and statements “centrist” is stretching the truth quite a bit.

Rogan supports higher taxes on the rich, universal health care, an end to the drug war and prison reform. He’s also very anti-Trump. It’s not spin to call him left. Here’s a better question, why do you think he’s right wing?

As for Rubin, that’s how he labels himself and I’ve not seen anything to contradict that.

Why do you think he is a left-leaning Democrat? From his Wiki:
