If Jordan Peterson sits down and debates the OP, my money is on Peterson, all of it. Besides being well educated he’s thoughtful and collected in a way I admire and think we need more of in our political discourse. Rogan is an interesting guy I’d have a beer with, but I wouldn’t classify him as an intellectual, seeing as hes on record as a moon landing hoax proponent. Neither one of them would have been considered “right wing” ten years ago.

Uh, that is why debates are preferred by the likes of Peterson, talking pretty carries the day while scientists that disagree with him and have the facts can succeed in a debate, but not always. So being successful in debating in favor of contrarian ideas is not as impressive as one would think. I was less impressed by seeing his page on rationalwiky, but I was thinking that he was very intelligent. Intelligent in his area of expertise, yes. Maybe you could enlighten me. I know him only from his fiction, which seems could have been written by someone with profoundly anarchosocialist views. You’re the second person who’s hinted to me that he’s actually a member of the alt-right. After the first person did so (maybe two years ago?), I had an (admittedly brief) look at Alexander’s web page and didn’t find any blatant evidence of him being an alt-right proponent. If there were any dog whistles, they were so far out of my range of hearing that I missed them completely. But maybe I was just looking in the wrong place. Can you point to some specific examples of distasteful things he’s posted? (If so, that would be a shame, as I had really enjoyed the story of his I read.)

Looking him up on RationalWiki, he apparently pushes conspiracy theories (while debunking others). In particularly, he pushes that ADHD and autism are fake. He is also anti-transgender.
But, looking into it more, the main reason he seems to be on the list is that he likes to promote the other people on the list. He will retweet the garbage they say, have them on his program to push their ideas without actually rebutting them, and pushes the anti-liberal agenda a lot.
He reminds me of our own SlackerInc. Not in the exact beliefs, but in the weird mix of having some liberal beliefs while pushing some alt-right nonsense SlackerInc even pushes at least one part of the IDW: Sam Harris.
I’m glad he’s apparently a decent human being on immigration. But that doesn’t make him not part of the problem.
People put way too much weight on “winning” “debates.” It’s not as if these are dispassionate statements of pure logic with facts that have been fact-checked. They are shows and an exercise in rhetoric.
The father of this style of debate was the ancient Greeks, and it’s not like they weren’t wrong about very many things. Yes, they contributed a lot, but resusing their ways of finding truth without alteration is a bad idea.
What passes for debate is largely about spectacle and aesthetics. It is not damning to someone’s ideas to say they’d lose a debate. It is only damning to show they can be dispassionately, logically disproven.
