Interested in giving away/getting free books? Get in here!

Do you have any books you’re never going to read or never going to read again?

Would you be willing to give them away?

Are you willing to check your email for a response?

Will you package, address and mail a book to a fellow Doper?

Do you suffer from dry, itchy skin*?

If you answered Yes to at least four of the above questions, have I a proposal for you! Why not participate in The SDMB Great Book Giveaway of 2005?
Top 3 Reasons to Participate in The SDMB Great Book Giveaway of 2005

  1. Getting a free book makes people happy, and making people happy is fun.

  2. You can clear away some of that clutter you’ve been meaning to get to (not that books are clutter, of course).

  3. Your hair will be 18% shinier and healthier after just one use!
    Rules

  4. List the title, author, edition and condition of the book you’d like to give away. Feel free to post additional information such as its genre, a brief description, a link to Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble’s site or what page(s) the naked people are on.

  5. The first person to reply to your post gets the book, unless he or she elects to allow a later poster to receive it.

  6. Ideally, the sender should pay for shipping. I just sent a book the other day and it was only $4.90 via regular USPS shipping.

  7. If you’ve different terms for or are simply not willing to ship internationally, please a) state this in your post and b) state your location, assuming it’s not in your Location: field.
I’ll start off with The Nanny Diaries by Emma Mclaughlin and Nicola Kraus. It’s the paperback edition and it is in good condition. I’m willing to ship internationally.

*[sub]If you answered Yes, liberally apply a thick, rich lotion as soon as you get out of the shower/bath.[/sub]

I have at least one spare copy of the Bachman Books, by Stephen King, including the story “Rage” which I believe is out of print now. I’ll pass on the Nanny Diaries, though, since I’ve read it.

I’m seriously tempted to claim the Bachman books, but I’ll wait and see what else pops up.

Also, can we list more than 1 book?

Title: Two Brothers
Author: Linda Lael Miller
Genre: 2 trashy western romance novels in 1
Condition: Read once, Like New

There’s more trashy romance novels where that came from! Also, a slew of out-dated textbooks that I thought would be nice additions to my library, but now I wish I’d just sold them back to the school bookstore when I had the chance.

I am so in, though right now I don’t have a list, I do know off the top of my head I have a number of Stephen King books. I also have a load of Clive Clussler books. I wish I could remember the rest, it’s either trade them or off to the library with them. I’ll have a list tomorrow I hope.

I’ll take The Nanny Diaries. Please?
If by “internationally,” you mean “across town” I think we’ll be okay.

  • I had some dry itchy skin, but I bought some Aveeno and it cleared right up.

I guess I should add that I’ll go through my stash and see what I can part with. I’ll make up a list in the next day or two.

Very cool. What time do you get off work? We could meet somewhere, and I could drop it off today. If that’s no good, I can put it in the mail today and you should have it by tomorrow. Send me an email and we’ll hash out the details.

I’ll offer a hardback copy of George Carlin’s Napalm & Silly Putty. The bidding starts at $0.00…

I offer:

Title: The Pickwick Papers
Author: Charles Dickens
Genre: English Literature
Condition: Read once or twice

And I’m looking for:

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources (in English)

I’ll take that one, please.

I have a number of books. All are used paperbacks. I’m prepared to ship as cheaply as possible; $5 a book would break me.

Among them:

Hess, Joan. Madness in Maggody, Maggody in Manhattan, Mischief in Maggody, O Little Town of Maggody, Mortal Remains in Maggody. All are reprints and used pbks.

Hess, Joan. Muletrain to Maggody. Hardback, 1st ed., no DJ.

Arnold, Margot. The Menehune Murders and The Catacomb Conspiracy. Used reprint pbks.

Davidson, Diane Mott. The Last Suppers, Killer Pancake, The Cereal Murders. Used reprint pbks.

Perry, Anne. Silence in Hanover Close, Farriers’ Lane, Cardington Crescent. Used reprint pbks.

Slater, Susan. The Pumpkin Seed Massacre. Used reprint pbk.

Hanff, Helene. 84 Charing Cross Road. Used reprint pbk.

Maron, Magaret. Slow Dollar. HB with DJ, Book Club edition.

Bronte, Anne. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Penguin Classics pbk, used.

That’s all I can see for now. All books are in reading shape but nothing you’d collect.

Whoops! Okay, most are paperbacks, but I’ve got a few hardbacks sprinkled in there.

I’ll post some more tomorrow, but for now:

Red Meat Cures Cancer, by Starbuck O’Dwyer. Humorous novel, in a sorta-Christopher-Buckleyish style.

Also - I’ll send only to the USA. Sorry, non-USAians.

FYI - I send a lot of books & stuff via USPS Media Mail (aka Book Rate). That runs $1.42 for the first pound, and $1.84 (I think) for up to 2 pounds, so there should be no reason to spend more than a couple bucks to send something within the USA.

I have a copy of Dubliners by James Joyce. It’s a collection of short stories. Much more comprehendible than his later stuff. I’ll see more of what I have and post some stuff later.
For now, in the US only; how much does it cost to ship international?

What a great idea! I did this last year in a Yahoo group and it worked great.

This list is just the books close to hand. If some of them find homes, I’ll post another list later.

Media Mail, U.S. only, postage reimbursement would be great, cuz I’m kinda poor right now.

furthur, may I claim O Little Town of Maggody?

Yippee! Free books!

I offer:

After the Quake: Stories by Haruki Murakami (hardcover with jacket)(audiobottle claimed this one in the precursor to this thread, but never emailed me, and his (her?) address is not public.)

Midwives by Chris Bohjalian (paperback, decent)

Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz (hardcover, no jacket, some water damage)

Nadya by Pat Murphy (hardcover, with jacket, good shape)

I tend to pick up books at work that were left behind by their owners. Since I’m the only reader in the place, my coworkers give any they find to me, whether I really want them or not, so it’d be nice to find them a good home.

How about giving away ebooks? If someone has ebooks, I’d be happy to receive 'em over email, it would be too much to ask people to send over paperbacks or hardcovers from <insert First World country here> to me in <insert Third World country here>.
If anyone has any ebooks, please list them here.

Naz, could I have Midwives?

I have a few books to give away but I don’t know if anyone would want them, as they’re mostly romance novels. I can give a rundown of authors if anyone is interested.

I’ll also take any Xanth novels anyone might want to be rid of, as I’ve decided to see how much of the series I can take. (The first few books turned out to be better than I thought they’d be.)
