International Pillow Fight Day!

And I was there!

The third annual International Pillow Fight Day was today/yesterday, Saturday, April 3. And I took part in the one in Los Angeles! Pershing Park, 3 pm.

Everyone brought their own pillow, and the idea was to aim for other people’s pillows, not deliberately hit other people. It was pretty much a mosh pit, with feathers flying everywhere. Some people were in costume. Some were wearing helmets. Some had faces or slogans on their pillows. Many pillows split. The further in you went, the more intense it got.

Afterwards, the grass and pavement were a veritable sea of feathers. People were encouraged to help clean up, but without brooms or shopvacs (well, someone had a leaf blower) it was like trying to mop up soap. There had been some TV cameras, from the minor local stations, but I didn’t get home until after the news, so I’ve no idea what the coverage was. At any rate, I got a lot of aggression out, and I’m sure everyone else did as well!

I didn’t feel like ruining any pillows, but I went (with camera in hand) to observe the Boston pillow fight on the Cambridge Common. I still received a couple of blows despite not having a weapon with which to retaliate. My own fault, I guess!

Lots of costumes and amusing sights at this one, too. Less of a mess, though, as the organizers asked that people not bring feather pillows. They also suggested that everyone remain as inconspicuous as possible until the signal was given so as to heighten the appearance of spontaneity, which I thought was funny because it’s a bit difficult for a gathering of hundreds of people to avoid attention.

The best part was when the main melee began to shrink, and a small crowd on the side formed a ring in which people challenged one another. This guy (in the center, with two pillows) was taking everyone down.
