This is probably something real simple to fix,but I’ve never been able to figure this out.
How do I get my browser to open a full size window, when I right click to open in another window? I always get stuck with these little windows (today they are opening even smaller than usual, they are about 3" by 2") I’ve tried dagging them to resize, but it does no good on subsequent windows. Is there a simple setting to fix this?
Windows is clever (it thinks). It saves the window sizes from the last time you rebooted. Close all your explorer windows but one, maximize it, then do the Windows shutdown thing and reboot. That should fix it.
No need to reboot. Just make sure the last browser window you close is the size you want it. then close using exit in the file menu and not the x in the top right corner. That does the trick.
Well, typically IE remembers the size of the window from the last time you use it. So if the last IE window you closed was really small, the next time you open it, you will have a small window.
What I Suggest is opening one IE window, and then resizing it to your liking. Then close the window. Open IE again and it should be the same size, and any subsequent window after that.
(or ‘close’ in the file menu) What I mean is - do not use the x, if you use the x the size change won’t save.
Once you’ve got the size right, feel free to close with x
Wow, thanks for the quick responses. It was driving me crazy. (the sad thing is that I’m majoring in computer networking, and I couldn’t figure this glitch out )
Have just one window open. Resize it to the position you’d like new windows to open in. When exiting, hold the control key (use the X to exit). New browsers will open in this last known configuration. This also works for Windows Notepad. It may work in the “maximized” position that you want, or you may just have to stretch windows as big as you can get them and use the ctrl-X trick.
Do not use maximize from the window control menu to enlarge the window. Do not use the maximize button in the upper right corner to resize the window. Manually stretch the window by dragging the sides, top and bottom to the desired size. Then close the window using close in the window control menu (right click on the corresponding task bar button).
OK Handy. So explain to us how to solve the OP’s problem using the “Internet Options”. And if you don’t know how…*.why would you post that as an answer? *
Or you could use regedit, find the key and enter the value 1 instead of 0 in the key “StartMaximized” (it’s named something like that. (that depends on your version of IE, and which OS you’re running, IIRC.
In Windows 2000 Professional, there is “HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Document Window/Maximized” which has a default value of “no”. Changing it to “yes” doesn’t seem to do anything, but maybe I need to reboot or close all my windows.
Some things to try:
1st: Right click on your IE icon, (down on your taskbar, by the start button) click properties, there is a box on that screen with a pull down - click maximimized and click OK.
See if that works.
If not…
2nd: Open an IE window. From a link within that windows, open another window. Drag the second window until it is of the desired size (don’t use the maximize button). Now close the first window and finally close the second window.
Sizes and positions should now be remembered.
And if still no luck… This or this should do the trick.

Well, Mr. Frink, if you read my whole post you would see I needed to know the version of IE the person was using. The versions aren’t all the same, ya know?
handy, you probably mean F11, which maximizes a window to full capacity. Either that, or you just mean he should get his help from there =]. Anyway, this happens to me sometimes where the window will mess up its default size and I’ll have to change everything again. I usually have the top half of my monitor for something and the bottom half for something else. I use Windows XP, but that shouldn’t matter any. I believe IE is basically the same for most versions.
Anyway, the steps:
-open IE and make sure this is the only IE window open
-if it is maximized, Restore Down, meaning bring it to a non-maximized, non-minimized status where the window is just there
-move the window to where you want the top left corner to always be
-resize the window fromt he bottom right corner
-close this window (it doesn’t matter if you use the X or not)
This causes IE to remember how you want the non-maximized window to open.
Steps to cause it to always open maximized:
-open IE and have it the only window open
-maximize the window
-close the window (go ahead and use the X. I dare you!)
Notes:
-certain programs like Kazaa tend to open little pop-up windows even when IE is closed. For some reason unknown to me, closing these when there are no other windows open will NOT make that the default size. It just doesn’t. If you want to keep the non-minimized window size constant, make sure you don’t have a weird configuration as the last window you close.
Other than that, I can’t think of anything else to type.
