Into The Blue (or Alba's Bikini Movie)

Serenity got a thread. So did “Violence”, I believe. So why not this amazing piece of film, Into The Blue? Hmm? All movies must be celebrated, great and small!

I’m not a misogynist or a “pig”, and I enjoy admiring the female form as much as anyone, but this movie so blatantly used Jessica Alba’s body in skimpy clothes to sell it that it actually made me feel sorry for her. If it had been, say, Eliza Dushku, I wouldn’t have been, since I’ve come to believe (possibly wrongly) that she’s okay with that type of thing. But here…

I’m sorry if I’m rambling…I’m just curious if you other Dopers have ever ran into movies that were obviously betting on an attractive star’s sex appeal to make the film and little else. I’m not condemning that, simply acknowledging (and sure, I’ll admit)enjoying it, as long as I get the sense all involved knwo what’s going on. Here, I really think she thought it was going to be a “real” movie, when it was a slow piece of crap that failed at everything but amazing underwater shots.

You’ve got to be kidding.

Yes. This is how most movies are marketed. If they want to double the box office take, they throw in either an explosion, a shark, or another hot woman to make out with the first hot woman.

(And by the way, I’ve seen only two reviews of “Into the Blue,” but both have been extremely positive, saying it’s a tightly-written thriller with good acting and a believable plot. I may go see it.)

It’s 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s pretty abysmal. It looks godawful in the previews except for Alba’s body.

Hey, I’m just giving you MHO. I didn’t much care for it, but I’ll be interested to hear your opinions of it. Upon reflection, I see my original statement was just a tad naive and sheltered sounding, so I’ll clarify. I realize and accept that sex sells many movies, but what mainstream movies have been so blatant that it was really obvious? And if I think THAT sounds too general (I’m not totally sure what I’m asking here, to be honest) I just wanna hear your opinions of the movie.

And Alba did look damn good, if you like her you’ll like this film.

Yes, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The number of cleavage shots made it so transparent that the star of the movie was Jennifer Love Hewitt’s breasts.

Not that I minded considering how awful that movie was.

Halle Berry as the catwoman was just one big body-shot.

Wait…this is a bad thing in movies?

Well I’ll start with the obvious ones:
Showgirls - Elizabeth Berkley
Striptease - Demi Moore

Elektra - Haven’t seen it but seems like Jenifer Garner in a skimpy kung-fu costume

oh and

Blue Crush - basically just 2 hours of Michelle Rodrigues and Kate Bosworth in a bikini surfing

She used the producer/director as much as they used her. What she did was totally consensual, she received lots of money for it, and no one was harmed. What’s the problem here?

The ad for “League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen” had one of the most crass shots I’d ever seen. They’re listing off the names and showing the actors, and when they mention Peta Wilson they showed like a tenth of a second of her face, then a two second or so shot of just her cleavage. Not prominent cleavage, but just cleavage. Nothing else in the shot.

I don’t normally notice stuff like that, but that really was obvious. Does the ad for ‘Into The Blue’ have any shots of just Alba’s ass?

Yeah, I realize she likely knew what she was getting into, and I’m not saying this is a bad thing for the most part. I was just wondering if someone somewhere said “This movie will blow” (again, IMHO, feel free to watch it and decide for yourself) “we need many more Alba closeups to get folks in the seats.”

I dunno, I haven’t reacted to a movie like this before. Perhaps I’m overreacting.

You just described the formula to every James Bond movie after Casino Royale.

Thanks to “Blue Crush” for putting more girls in the water!
Bikini’s tend to get stuck in places…

Waters cooling off now…Time for tight wetsuits!

A couple of years ago, I’d have agreed with you. But in the last few months, Alba has been appearing in numerous bikini and lingerie shoots. So I guess she’s decided to work it.

The NY Times review for this movie is a hoot:

Ah, yes: best poster ever

I never actually saw the movie, but I am a big fan of the poster.

I just watched it, and, pretty much: yes.

They could probably make a whole movie just about that.

I’ve seen whole moves about asses, just not Jessica Alba’s.
